About The Position

Habitat for Humanity of San Antonio and Guadalupe Valley is seeking an Underwriting Assistant to support the management team's goals, objectives, and decisions, and to communicate these ideals and mission to others in a positive manner. This role involves ensuring strict adherence to HFHSA policies, procedures, and internal controls, and utilizing team meetings for communication and collaboration. The Underwriting Assistant will assist the Underwriting Manager and Underwriting Associate with various aspects of loan processing, closing preparation, and file maintenance, while accurately entering data and proofreading documents. This position also serves as a liaison between Habitat and external entities such as title companies, insurance companies, and assistance program agencies.

Requirements

  • Computer skills and experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook for email, and general internet research.
  • Bilingual in Spanish (required)
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in both English and Spanish.
  • Strong proofreading skills with ability to find and correct errors.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and work under pressure.
  • Ability to set priorities based on long- and short-term goals and meet deadlines.
  • Great organizational skills with proficiency in producing timely work, and adherence to policies and procedures.
  • Detail oriented with a big-picture view.
  • Must pass an initial and periodic background checks.
  • Must have and maintain a Texas driver’s license, auto liability insurance, and a good driving record.
  • Requires accurate mathematical calculation abilities.
  • Requires the ability to drive a motor vehicle for business errands during the workday.
  • Requires the ability to function effectively in a fully tobacco-free and vape-free environment without taking tobacco or vape breaks during work time.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience using mortgage software preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Support HFHSA ideals and mission through support of the management team’s goals, objectives, and decisions.
  • Communicate HFHSA ideals and mission to others in a positive manner.
  • Keep the Underwriting Manager appraised of all significant issues and all matters requiring corrective action or organizational attention.
  • Ensure strict adherence to HFHSA policies, procedures, and internal controls.
  • Utilize team meetings to keep management and other staff informed and to collaborate with and receive information from others.
  • Assist the Underwriting Manager and Underwriting Associate with loan processing, closing preparation process and activities, submitting assistance requests, and file maintenance.
  • Accurately enter data by utilizing various Microsoft Office programs, Calyx mortgage software, online portals, and other programs.
  • Proofread and verify accuracy of information generated on various documents and spreadsheets.
  • Order and track documents for closing, including appraisals, title policies, surveys, flood certificates, insurance binders, etc.
  • Prepare and distribute pre-closing documents and disclosures to homebuyers.
  • Prepare closing packages including compiling documents, organizing files, copying and digitizing documents, etc.
  • Assist Underwriting Associate with facilitating closings in English and Spanish.
  • Ensure timely recording of legal documents by taking them to the courthouse or submitting them to the title company for electronic recording.
  • Process closed files by verifying signatures and notary listings, copying and distributing various documents, and digitizing/filing all final documents.
  • Organize and maintain filing systems.
  • Assist with client file reviews (initial, lot select, pre-construction, and pre-closing), as needed.
  • Prepare and submit down payment assistance and second lien request packages.
  • Serve as liaison between Habitat and title companies, insurance companies, and all agencies that offer assistance programs for homebuyers, including FHLB and TDHCA.
  • Maintain timeline for assistance request submissions.
  • Compile homebuyer documents needed for grant reimbursement requests.
  • Prepare various reports and statistical information.
  • Submit Homestead Exemption applications and monitor status of exemptions.
  • Assist Family Services team, as needed.
  • Processing Mortgage Counseling Questionnaires (MCQs) to assess eligibility for homeownership programs.
  • Assist with Pre-Closing and Homeowners Insurance classes for homebuyers ensuring all documents and ownership responsibilities are properly explained.
  • Cover front desk and receptionist duties.
  • Other duties as assigned.
