About The Position

The Ultrasound Extern performs diagnostic ultrasound imaging ordered by a provider under the direction of a licensed Sonographer. The role assists with transporting and preparing patients, cleaning and stocking supplies in assigned areas, and supporting technologists as needed. The position uses Cerner and Hospital Information System (HIS) software programs.

Requirements

High school diploma or GED.
Letter of recommendation from a Sonography Program Director.
Must be a student entering the spring semester in an Ultrasound program.
BLS certification.

Responsibilities

Performs diagnostic ultrasound exams under the supervision of a licensed sonographer.
Assists the sonographer as needed during imaging procedures.
Attends to patients’ needs and promptly reports to a sonographer if unable to accommodate requests.
Moves or transports patients between hospital departments via wheelchair, stretcher, or beds.
Initiates and follows through with proper hand-off of patients.
Maintains work areas and equipment in a clean and organized manner.
Uses portable O2 tanks and regulates O2 flow.
May perform other duties as assigned or requested; job specifications may be modified or updated at any time.
Uses the AIDET (Acknowledge, Introduce, Duration, Explanation, Thank you) process to explain procedures and observes patients to ensure safety and comfort during exams.
Follows department-specific standard work and departmental policies.
Practices aseptic techniques and good infection-control procedures consistent with hospital policy.
Secures and returns supplies and maintains orderliness and cleanliness of work areas between each patient.
