About The Position

The Ultrasound Extern assists with general, ob-gyn, and vascular exams across a variety of settings and patient ages, under the supervision of a registered diagnostic sonographer. The extern follows system safety and quality standards and uses proper ergonomic techniques. Studies require approval by a supervising sonographer or radiologist; the supervising sonographer back-scans patients until the extern demonstrates competency for the exam. The role requires compliance with department-specific competencies.

Requirements

• Currently enrolled in an accredited diagnostic medical sonography program.
• Hospital experience required.
• American Heart Association Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support (BLS) or Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).

Responsibilities

• Apply knowledge of anatomy and pathophysiology and use critical thinking to select appropriate imaging techniques under established protocols and acquire required images under a registered sonographer’s supervision.
• Evaluate studies for diagnostic quality and obtain approval from a supervising sonographer or radiologist; undergo back-scanning by the supervising sonographer until competency is demonstrated for each exam.
• Use critical thinking to triage and prioritize patients and maintain order accuracy.
• Complete documentation accurately and on time in accordance with department policy and procedure, including image management and accurate EMR documentation, under a registered sonographer’s supervision.
• Follow safety practices, including use of mobilization and immobilization devices, safe patient handling, infection prevention, proper personal protective equipment, and hand hygiene.
