DMC - Laser Tube Line Operator A Low

reliance•Salt Lake City, UT

About The Position

The Tube Laser Operator sets up, programs, and operates CNC fiber tube laser cutting systems for industrial metal fabrication. The role processes structural steel tubing, pipe, channel, and custom profiles to engineering drawings and production schedules, with emphasis on precise cutting, efficient material use, and compliance with safety and quality standards in a fast-paced manufacturing environment. The operator configures machine settings, uses tube nesting and CAD/CAM software to optimize material yield, checks dimensions and cut quality, and prepares finished parts for secondary processing, welding, or shipping. The position also includes routine machine inspections and maintenance, troubleshooting, and maintaining an organized work area. The physical demands are classified as medium work: exerting up to 50 pounds occasionally, up to 20 pounds frequently, and up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects.

Requirements

  • Advanced mechanical aptitude and understanding of industrial fabrication principles, laser cutting dynamics, and structural metal properties.
  • Ability to read and interpret complex engineering blueprints, CAD/CAM drawings, and tube fabrication layout diagrams.
  • Working knowledge of tube nesting software, rotary axis parameters, and material yield optimization techniques.
  • Proficiency using precision measurement instruments such as calipers, micrometers, and angle finders.
  • Ability to troubleshoot machine and software problems quickly to minimize downtime.
  • Effective communication skills and ability to collaborate with crane and forklift operators, supervisors, and internal sales and production teams.
  • Ability to meet the stated physical demands of medium work and perform the listed physical activities.

Responsibilities

  • Configure, operate, and monitor CNC fiber tube laser cutting machines to process structural steel tubing, pipe, channel, and custom profiles according to drawings and production schedules.
  • Adjust focus positions, assist gas pressures, cutting speeds, and power parameters based on profile type, wall thickness, and material grade.
  • Perform pre-operation inspections, clean lenses, check nozzles, and conduct preventative maintenance on optical assemblies, chucks, and loading systems.
  • Use tube nesting and CAD/CAM software to optimize part layouts and minimize material waste.
  • Review shop floor drawings, bills of materials, and cut lists to verify dimensions, profile types, and material certifications.
  • Measure finished tubes and profiles and inspect dimensions, angles, cut edges, kerfs, copes, and miters for defects; adjust the machine as needed.
  • Label, sort, and stage finished tube bundles and skeleton offcuts for secondary processing, welding, or shipping.
  • Follow OSHA standards, plant safety guidelines, and PPE requirements, including laser-safe eye protection, ear protection, and steel-toed boots.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and hazard-free work area around loading bays, bundle loaders, and scrap collection bins.
  • Troubleshoot operational errors, optical alignment issues, assist gas flow problems, and software nesting glitches to reduce downtime.
