Truck Helper & Sorting Room Worker (7823)
About The Position
This position is responsible for assisting in picking up donations by riding in a Salvation Army truck and lifting, carrying, and/or hauling donations into the truck and unloading the same at the warehouse. The role also involves assisting the Truck Driver with navigation, ensuring the accountability, security, and safety of donations in transit, and helping maintain the vehicle. Additionally, the worker will receive, sort, price, and prepare donated items for store display, determining their suitability and pricing based on established standards, and assisting in maintaining the orderliness and cleanliness of the warehouse area.
Requirements
- Six months experience lifting and hauling heavy items such as appliances and furniture
- Ability to determine the condition of items in accordance with established standards.
- Ability to follow instruction and work independently.
- Ability to work effectively and cooperatively with co-workers.
- Ability to perform strenuous, heavy work involving the lifting and carrying of heavy objects.

- No formal education required, but any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is acceptable.
Responsibilities
- Rides in a Salvation Army truck on a scheduled route to pick up donated items.
- Assists in navigating the driver to destinations by reading a map and/or hand-written directions.
- Inspects donated items briefly to ensure they can be used according to established policies and procedures.
- Explains policy to customers regarding the types of items that can be accepted.
- Lifts, carries, and/or hauls donations into the truck.
- Packs items in the truck to maximize space, protect items from damage, and ensure safety.
- Receives, inspects, and sorts donated items such as clothes, shoes, household items, bric-a-brac, etc., according to category and condition.
- Selects items suitable for store display and distributes them to the appropriate area for further sorting and/or pricing.
- Discards items in accordance with established procedures.
- Maintains the orderliness and cleanliness of the warehouse area.
