About The Position

This role involves operating trucks, primarily for hauling scrap metal. Key responsibilities include loading and unloading materials, inspecting and grading metal for inventory, performing daily vehicle inspections, and communicating with both office staff and customers. The driver will work independently while on the road and collaboratively with colleagues in the scrap metal yard to ensure a safe and efficient working environment. Daily maintenance of the truck, such as refueling and lubrication, is also required, along with maintaining a clean work area and organizing materials for optimal space utilization. Adherence to safety, health, and environmental regulations is paramount.

Requirements

  • Must pass a medical physical and drug test.
  • Must pass a background check.
  • Ability to communicate with others effectively.
  • Ability to understand direction (written or oral).
  • Ability to use basic math skills as the job demands.

Nice To Haves

  • Employees in this position prior to April 2014 are presumed to be qualified and are "grandfathered" into their positions.
  • High school diploma or GED and/or foreign education acceptable.
  • Bi-lingual (English & Spanish) language skills a plus.
  • Previous experience operating a Wheel Loader a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Load and unload trucks hauling scrap metal.
  • Inspect and determine metal grade for inventory tracking.
  • Perform DOT daily operation and safety inspection.
  • Communicate with office and customers to determine commodities to load.
  • Work independently when driving scrap metal.
  • Work with customers to satisfy their needs and assist them when problems arise.
  • Work with other employees in the scrap metal yard to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Perform normal daily operation maintenance (refueling, lubrication, cooling system cleaning, and housekeeping).
  • Clean up work area at the end of shift.
  • Keep work areas neat and orderly.
  • Organize materials for more effective use of space.
  • Dispose of various waste materials in the appropriate manner.
  • Inspection to ensure cleanup is completed.
  • Maintain effective housekeeping in the workplace area for safety and hygienic conditions.
