About The Position

This position will assist the Triage Unit in providing ancillary support for Triage Unit functions. The responsibilities of the Triage Unit Medical Assistant will include scheduling patients’ post emergency room and hospital discharge follow-ups, sorting faxes assigned to the Triage Unit, answering phone calls that come into the Triage Unit phone line, checking the Patient Portal, and interacting with Triage Unit staff and other healthcare providers to assure continuity and quality of patient care services. The Triage Unit Medical Assistant is held accountable clinically to clinicians while they are held accountable administratively to the Triage Unit RN Supervisor and Triage RNs. APHCV expects all employees to respond and participate in emergency situations per emergency policies and procedures. APHCV requires all staff to comply with Standards of Conduct and Compliance Program related policies and procedures. Such compliance is part of this position’s performance evaluation. Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant program & BCLS certified
  • High school diploma and GED or minimum of one year experience working in a primary care setting
  • Regular predictable attendance during clinic hours
  • Ability to work efficiently and accurately with minimum supervision
  • Able to communicate in English and preferably at least one of the following languages: Thai, Khmer, Tagalog, Vietnamese or Spanish.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States
  • Completion of APHCV Health Assessment Form
  • Completion of DOJ background check

Responsibilities

  • Execute Triage Unit responsibilities: Trained in checking Patient Portal to sort out patient communications such as lab result requests, medication refill requests, and medical questions and task Triage Unit RN staff and/or clinicians as necessary. Answer phone calls that come into Triage line to sort out patient communications such as lab result requests, medication refill requests, and medical questions and task Triage Unit RN staff and/or clinicians as necessary. Check incoming daily faxes designated for Triage Unit to sort out such as lab result requests, medication refill requests, and medical questions and task Triage Unit RN staff and/or clinicians as necessary. Task Triage Unit RN staff or provider with medication refill requests from patient or other entities. Task Triage Unit RN staff or provider with lab result interpretation requests from patient or specialist providers. Contact patients recently discharged from emergency room care to schedule follow-up appointments with their primary care provider and keeps daily audit records. Works with Care Manager and assists, if assigned, in contacting patients recently discharged from hospital care to schedule follow-up appointments with their primary care provider. Fill out medication prior authorization requests with as much demographic and pertinent information as possible and send to assigned provider for disposition. Process pre-operation clearance requests and gather clinical information necessary to expedite patients’ specialty care. Fill out medical forms with as much demographic and pertinent information as possible and send to assigned provider for disposition. Review incoming faxes and mail from various entities, including pharmacies, specialists, and other entities and forward them to Triage Unit RN or other departments as necessary. Retrieve laboratory results from printer, monitor and cross reference with orders, and disseminate labs to clinicians for review. Ensure that laboratory results are in patient’s medical record before appointment and contact laboratory if results are not in the chart. Clean and prepare Triage Unit rooms making sure instruments and/or specimen kits are ready at time of visit. Discharge patients by providing pre-written educational information and instructions as instructed by clinicians and/or Triage Unit RN staff. Ensure charts and pertinent test results are available prior to clinicians’ or Triage Unit RN staff’s direct/telephone interaction with patient. Any other duties assigned by the Triage Unit RN Supervisor or his/her delegate.
  • Promote effective and efficient patient care: Assist other clinic staff in providing good efficient patient care. Maintain proper and accurate documentation and logs. Assist in providing translation and interpretation services as needed. Facilitate patient flow by working effectively and efficiently. Maintain open communication with other clinic staff. Maintain professional demeanor at all times with patients, caregivers, clinicians, and staff. Participate in data collection and entry as assigned. Provide administrative assistance to Triage Unit RN Supervisor. Assist in reporting of communicable diseases. Perform other duties as assigned by Triage Unit RN Supervisor or his/her delegate.
  • Professional Development/Others: Attend APHCV staff meeting, clinic staff meeting, department meetings, and other meetings as assigned by supervisor. Attend trainings as assigned by supervisor. Communicate training needs to supervisor. Participate in agency wide events as mandated by APHCV’s policy.
