About The Position

The Tampa Bay Times is hiring a Trending News Producer focused on business and sports. This role is part of a new high-metabolism digital-first Bay Now team that produces multiple breakouts, explainers, and aggregations daily, focusing on interesting news developments. The Trending News Producer will work quickly and nimbly to make sense of larger stories or focus on high-interest topics and trends relevant to readers. This includes providing context for various rankings and lists, and Tampa Bay and Florida's position within them. The work should be fast, sharp, and fun when appropriate. A significant portion of the posts will be aggregations and listicles, offering concise news and information. While the primary focus is on business and sports, the producer may occasionally write trending posts on other subjects. This role also involves podcast production, filming, video editing, and audio recording/editing, in addition to sharp news judgment and the ability to write with speed and attention to detail. The position reports to the Assistant Managing Editor, Digital Engagement and is located in the St. Petersburg, FL office.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, English, or related field.
• Relevant experience writing for a journalistic outlet, including a student newspaper.
• A combination of speed and attention to detail.
• A constant hunger to find new stories and generate traffic.
• A demonstrated track record of producing, recording, filming, and editing podcasts of at least 15 minutes.
• Filming, video editing, and audio recording/editing skills are required.
• Sharp news judgment.
• Demonstrated ability to write with speed and attention to detail.

Responsibilities

• Write two articles a day, five days a week, primarily on sports or business topics, but other topics as required.
• Constantly search for news to cover and find engaging, locally-centered angles on stories.
• Get on publicists’ email blast lists to find news to aggregate.
• Receive assignments from across the newsroom.
• Track the traffic on your stories to assess performance and brainstorm follow-ups.
• Produce, record, film, and edit podcasts of at least 15 minutes in length or more, up to several times per week.
