About The Position
The Transporter transports patients throughout the hospital under the direction of a registered nurse, provides supplies and equipment needed for patient care, and helps monitor equipment safety, maintenance, and cleanliness. The role also supports patient transfers and discharges, delivers specimens and supplies, responds to emergencies, and helps ensure patient information remains confidential.
Requirements
- High school education or equivalent.
- American Heart Association BLS certification.
- Ability to exercise initiative within scope of practice and benefit from constructive criticism.
- Knowledge of the role and ability to respond to Emergency Codes.
Nice To Haves
- Completed EMT course.
- Previous successful experience verified by reference check.
Responsibilities
- Transport patients to other departments by stretcher or wheelchair and assist with ambulation and transfers as needed.
- Transport portable oxygen tanks, change oxygen regulators, and monitor oxygen tank pressure and oxygen keys or wrenches each shift.
- Report unsafe or broken equipment and set up traction equipment for patient use.
- Lift or assist with lifting patients to move them on or off beds, examination tables, surgical tables, or stretchers.
- Notify nurses when patients leave for tests and return, using Transport-tracking; alert nurses to patient changes or problems.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding patient information.
- Assist with orientation of new personnel.
- Clean wheelchairs, hospital beds, and portable medical equipment, and document needed repairs or maintenance.
- Respond to emergency situations, including emergency medical calls, security calls, and fire alarms.
- Restrain patients to prevent violence or injury or to help clinicians administer treatment.
- Transport portable medical equipment and supplies between rooms or departments.
- Assist with postmortem care, transport bodies to the morgue, and assist funeral directors with retrieval of bodies according to policy.
- Transport medications to and from clinical areas following proper procedure.
- Assist with application of Clinicare and specialty mattresses.
- Obtain and document patient weights; transfer patients to and from beds and chairs.
- Deliver specimens, including blood pickups, to the laboratory.
- Obtain needed equipment and supplies, deliver courtesy trays when requested, and assist with patient discharges.
