About The Position

In this role employees will have direct patient contact. The primary function is to transport patients, visitors and patient related items throughout the Mayo Clinic campus in a safe and efficient manner. Employees will have frequent interaction with nurses, radiology techs, desk staff, door attendants and others. Employees will receive primary work assignments via an iPhone and pager. Employee must be able to function independently and as a team member with minimal supervision or direction and possess knowledge with the use of a smart phone. Proper input and management of transport requests may be required via computers and/or working with dispatch staff via telephone.

Requirements

  • Direct patient contact.

  • Stand and/or walk 10-12 miles per 8-hour shift.
  • Frequently push/pull patients up to 200 pounds and occasionally up to or exceeding 350 pounds.
  • Proficiency in the safe operation of multiple types of motorized patient transport equipment.
  • Exceptional fine motor skills.
  • Full use of hands.
  • Ability to perform repetitive wrist and elbow movements.
  • Repetitive foot motions.
  • Trunk rotate/twist/reach actions.
  • Adhere to medical isolation precautions and protocols (requires additional hands-on training).
  • Minimum of 80 hours of on the job training is necessary to perform basic job functions.

Responsibilities

  • Transport patients, visitors, and patient-related items throughout the Mayo Clinic campus.
  • Receive work assignments via iPhone and pager.
  • Input and manage transport requests via computers and/or telephone.
  • Push/pull patients up to 200 pounds and occasionally up to or exceeding 350 pounds.
  • Operate multiple types of motorized patient transport equipment.
  • Disinfect equipment after each patient use and request maintenance as needed.
  • Perform wheelchair roundups to General Service storage locations or designated floors.
  • Transport patients requiring oxygen, intravenous pumps, wound vacs, and/or other special equipment.
  • Assist patients in and out of wheelchairs/stretchers.
  • Perform correct patient identification by utilizing two patient identifiers (name and date of birth).
  • Confirm with a nurse that the patient has a minimum of 30 minutes of oxygen before transportation occurs when a patient is on oxygen.
  • Use a slider board and slider sheet to transfer patients to/from beds and/or stretchers with assistance from other care team members.
  • Confirm with staff and adhere to medical isolation precautions and protocols.
  • Provide detailed verbal communication to appropriate staff during the drop off and pick up of patients in the inpatient setting.
  • Attend meetings outside of normal work schedule.
  • Assist in the training of new employees.
