Employees must be able to work independently and as part of a team with minimal supervision and possess knowledge of smartphone use. This is a Limited Tenure position, meaning employment is for a set period (approximately 24 months) with the expectation of securing another role within Mayo Clinic thereafter.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Previous customer service experience required.
  • Must be able to work independently and in a group setting with minimal supervision.
  • Exceptional verbal communication skills.
  • Telephone and human relation skills to interact with patients, guests and staff.
  • Must communicate effectively in a professional and respectful manner during high-stress situations.
  • Must be able to adapt to unpredictable and stressful situations, while maintaining a calm and pleasant demeanor.
  • Strong problem solving skills are necessary.
  • Must be able to demonstrate exceptional initiative and a proven ability to quickly respond to customer needs in a fast paced work environment.
  • Basic computer skills are required, with proficiency in Microsoft Word and Outlook.
  • Must be able to read, write, speak and understand English.

Responsibilities

  • Transport patients, visitors, and patient-related items throughout the Mayo Clinic campus in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Interact frequently with nurses, radiology techs, desk staff, door attendants, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Receive primary work assignments via an iPhone and pager, and manage transport requests via computers and/or working with dispatch staff via telephone.
  • Stand and/or walk 10-12 miles per 8-hour shift.
  • Frequently push/pull patients up to 200 pounds and occasionally up to or exceeding 350 pounds.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in the safe operation of multiple types of motorized patient transport equipment.
  • Perform repetitive wrist and elbow movements, repetitive foot motions, and trunk rotate/twist/reach actions.
  • Disinfect equipment after each patient use and request maintenance as needed.
  • Perform wheelchair roundups to General Service storage locations or designated floors.
  • Transport patients requiring oxygen, intravenous pumps, wound vacs, and/or other special equipment.
  • Assist patients in and out of wheelchairs/stretchers.
  • Perform correct patient identification by utilizing two patient identifiers (name and date of birth).
  • Confirm with a nurse that a patient has a minimum of 30 minutes of oxygen before transportation occurs.
  • Use a slider board and slider sheet to transfer patients to/from beds and/or stretchers with assistance from other care team members.
  • Confirm with staff and adhere to medical isolation precautions and protocols.
  • Provide detailed verbal communication to appropriate staff during patient drop-off and pick-up in the inpatient setting.
  • Attend meetings outside of normal work schedule and/or assist in the training of new employees.
  • Provide patients and visitors assistance as necessary, such as with nausea symptoms.
  • Transport patients on a monitor cart to/from an intensive care unit (ICU) which requires Nurse and/or Respiratory Therapist accompaniment.
  • Continuously monitor the patient’s condition during transport when a patient care staff member has not accompanied.
  • Call a code blue if medical staff is needed to evaluate the patient’s condition during transport.
