About The Position

The Transportation Worker 3 Equipment Operator is assigned to the Fayette County Headquarters and reports to the Lookout Substation in Fayette County. Under general supervision, this role performs full-performance level skilled work in the construction and maintenance of highways. The position involves operating various motorized highway maintenance equipment, making repairs to highways, culverts, and bridge structures, and performing minor mechanical repairs in the field. Responsibilities also include maintaining equipment, performing flagging duties, erecting traffic control signs and barricades, and other related tasks such as mowing and brush cutting. The selected applicant will be placed in a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program, with progression dependent on hours completed, proficiency, training, and obtaining a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). The WVDOT is responsible for extensive road maintenance, which may require employees to work irregular hours, shifts, weekends, and overtime, sometimes without prior notice. A valid Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is required for the Equipment Operator assignment. The hourly rate is $22.7113 (Pay Grade 12H Tier 1).

Requirements

  • Valid Class A or B CDL.
  • Four (4) years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience operating heavy equipment such as bulldozers, end loaders, dump trucks, drillers, etc.
  • Knowledge of safety practices used in structural steel construction.
  • Knowledge of the procedures, techniques, and equipment used in the area of assignment.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and applicable safety standards and procedures in the area of assignment.
  • Knowledge of basic blueprint reading.
  • Knowledge of general construction and maintenance practices.
  • Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the maintenance, repair, and overhaul of gasoline and diesel-powered engines and their components.
  • Knowledge of the operation of motor-driven equipment.
  • Ability to diagnose mechanical problems and determine appropriate procedures for repairs.
  • Ability to safely operate basic hand and power tools.
  • Ability to read operation manuals, blueprints, and specifications in the area of assignment.
  • Ability to operate motorized equipment in the area of assignment.
  • Ability to perform skilled trades work in bridge construction and maintenance.
  • Ability to operate and maintain highway equipment and attachments.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records of daily maintenance activities and of gauges and meters used in heating, ventilation, and cooling systems.
  • Ability to climb high steel structures.
  • Ability to train and work cooperatively with other skilled and semi-skilled workers.
  • Valid driver’s license.

  • Successful completion of an approved vocational school program may be substituted for two (2) years of the required experience in the specified area of assignment.

Responsibilities

  • Operates motorized highway maintenance equipment such as skid steer, utility tractor, aerial bucket truck, front-end loader, tandem-axle truck, and snowplow.
  • Makes major repairs to highways, culverts, and bridge structures.
  • Makes minor mechanical repairs in the field, such as changing tires, blades, or filters.
  • Maintains equipment, including cleaning, lubricating, and checking fluid levels.
  • Performs flagging, erects traffic control signs and barricades.
  • Shovels materials, cleans culverts, mows, and cuts brush.
  • Operates a hydraulic crane.
  • Utilizes heavy motorized equipment to excavate, backfill, grade, or level soil and aggregate.
  • Utilizes heavy motorized equipment to grade surfaces, roll or compact soil and aggregate.
  • Leads or trains lower-level equipment operators.
  • Assists the Core Driller in positioning the drilling rig.
  • Adds rods or augers to drill.
  • Removes core samples from the core barrel.
  • Assists in cleaning and maintenance of the drilling rig and related tools and equipment.
  • Installs steel piling in pre-drilled holes.
  • Cleans the drilling site of debris after drilling is completed.
  • Sets and detonates explosive charges for earth removal.
