About The Position

This entry-level position, under general supervision, performs functions in the construction and maintenance of highways. The role involves driving light trucks and operating various equipment such as fork trucks, end loaders, skid steers, rollers, utility tractors, and brush chippers. Responsibilities also include traffic control, transporting materials, and potentially answering telephone and radio calls during snow removal and ice control (SRIC). Selected applicants will be placed in a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program and must obtain a commercial driver's license (CDL) within six months of employment. Advancement opportunities are dependent on performance, training, and obtaining/maintaining a CDL. The WVDOT is responsible for over 35,000 miles of state roads, which may require employees to work irregular hours, shifts, weekends, and overtime, sometimes without prior notice.

Requirements

  • No formal education required.
  • No prior experience is required.
  • Ability to obtain a commercial driver's license (CDL) within six months of employment.
  • Valid driver's license required.
  • Knowledge of general safety procedures.
  • Knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of vehicles and other motor-driven equipment.
  • Knowledge of the operation of motor-driven equipment.
  • Skill in the use of tools and equipment used in the repair of motor-driven equipment.
  • Ability to diagnose minor mechanical problems and determine appropriate procedures for repair.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to learn from example and work cooperatively with others.
  • Ability to maintain routine records (timecards, repair work orders).

  • Progress through the apprenticeship program, as well as the opportunity for advancement to a higher classification, is dependent upon hours completed, proficiency in work, training completed, as well as obtaining and maintaining a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).

Responsibilities

  • Driving a light truck or vehicle during regular operation as well as during snow removal and ice control (SRIC).
  • Operating various equipment such as a fork truck, end loader, skid steer, rollers, utility tractor, brush chipper, as well as various hand tools.
  • Answering telephone and radio calls during SRIC.
  • Transporting materials or fuel to equipment.
