The Transportation Worker 3 Equipment Operator is responsible for performing full-performance level skilled work in the construction and maintenance of highways. This role involves operating various motorized highway maintenance equipment, making major and minor repairs to highways and structures, and maintaining equipment. The position is part of a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program, with progression dependent on hours completed, proficiency, training, and obtaining a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). The West Virginia Department of Transportation (WVDOT) is responsible for over 35,000 miles of state roads, and this role may require irregular hours, shifts, weekends, and overtime. Specific duties include operating hydraulic cranes, excavating, grading, backfilling, leading lower-level operators, assisting with core drilling operations, installing steel piling, and setting explosive charges for earth removal. Travel may be required.
