About The Position

The Transportation Worker 3 Crew Chief position is assigned to the Fayette County Headquarters and reports to the Fallsview Substation in Fayette County. This role involves acting as a working crew leader, guiding a crew in the maintenance and repair of highways. Responsibilities include investigating citizen complaints to identify necessary repairs and materials, participating in meetings to assign crew members to daily projects, overseeing work completion, and preparing reports on time, materials, and work inspections. The position may require certification on specific equipment such as hydraulic cranes, graders, bulldozers, backhoes, excavators, or welding units. Employees may be exposed to inclement weather and hazardous working conditions. The WVDOT is responsible for over 35,000 miles of state roads, which may require employees to work irregular hours, shifts, weekends, and overtime, sometimes with short notice. A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) will be required within six months of employment for this role.

Requirements

Four (4) years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience in roadway construction or roadway maintenance, or in bridge or structural steel construction comparable to the work performed by the Division of Highways.
Knowledge of safety practices used in structural steel construction.
Knowledge of the procedures, techniques, and equipment used in the area of assignment.
Knowledge of the occupational hazards and applicable safety standards and procedures in the area of assignment.
Knowledge of basic blueprint reading.
Knowledge of general construction and maintenance practices.
Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the maintenance, repair, and overhaul of gasoline and diesel-powered engines and their components.
Knowledge of the operation of motor-driven equipment.
Ability to diagnose mechanical problems and determine appropriate procedures for repairs.
Ability to safely operate basic hand and power tools.
Ability to read operation manuals, blueprints, and specifications in the area of assignment.
Ability to operate motorized equipment in the area of assignment.
Ability to perform skilled trades work in bridge construction and maintenance.
Ability to operate and maintain highway equipment and attachments.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to maintain accurate records of daily maintenance activities and of gauges and meters used in heating, ventilation, and cooling systems.
Ability to climb high steel structures.
Ability to train and work cooperatively with other skilled and semi-skilled workers.
Travel may be required; therefore, a valid driver’s license is required.
A valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) will be required within six (6) months of employment.

Nice To Haves

Will be required to become certified on one or more of the following types of equipment: hydraulic crane, grader, bulldozer, backhoe, track/rubber-tire excavator, or welding unit.
Successful completion of an approved vocational school program may be substituted for two (2) years of the required experience in the specified area of assignment.

Responsibilities

Leads a crew of transportation workers and participates in the maintenance and repair of highways.
May lead a crew of sign shop employees in the fabrication, location, installation, and repair of highway signage.
Investigate citizen complaints on roads and inspect highways to determine needed repair work.
Assists in scheduling maintenance and repair projects.
Coordinates equipment and materials needed.
Assigns duties to crew members and leads crews in the completion of projects.
Completes all required reports concerning time and attendance, materials, equipment, and inspection of work.
Performs other related duties as required.
