About The Position

This is an entry-level, classified-exempt, and at-will position reporting to the Tucker County Headquarters. The role involves construction and maintenance of highways, operating various equipment, and potentially performing administrative tasks during snow removal and ice control (SRIC). Selected applicants will be placed in a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program and must obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within 6 months of employment. Advancement opportunities are dependent on hours completed, proficiency, training, and maintaining a CDL. The WVDOT maintains over 35,000 miles of state roads, which may require employees to work irregular hours, shifts, weekends, and overtime, sometimes with short notice.

Requirements

  • No formal education required.
  • No prior experience required.
  • Must obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of employment.
  • Possess a valid driver's license.
  • Knowledge of general safety procedures.
  • Knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of vehicles and other motor-driven equipment.
  • Knowledge of the operation of motor-driven equipment.
  • Skill in the use of tools and equipment used in the repair of motor-driven equipment.
  • Ability to diagnose minor mechanical problems and determine appropriate procedures for repair.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to learn from example and work cooperatively with others.
  • Ability to maintain routine records (timecards, repair work orders).

  • Progress through the apprenticeship program is dependent upon hours completed, proficiency in work, training completed, as well as obtaining and maintaining a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).

Responsibilities

  • Driving a light truck or vehicle during regular operation, snow removal, and ice control (SRIC).
  • Operating equipment such as a fork truck, end loader, skid steer, rollers, utility tractor, and brush chipper.
  • Operating various hand tools for vegetation control.
  • Answering telephone and radio calls during SRIC.
  • Transporting materials or fuel to equipment.
  • Providing traffic control by flagging on job sites.
  • Performing minor maintenance on fleet equipment and vehicles.
  • Plowing snow using a light truck.
