About The Position

This is an entry-level, classified-exempt, and at-will position reporting to the Nicholas County Headquarters. The role involves the construction and maintenance of highways. Responsibilities include driving light trucks and vehicles for regular operations and snow/ice removal, operating various equipment like forklifts, end loaders, skid steers, rollers, utility tractors, and brush chippers, and using hand tools. The position may involve answering telephone and radio calls during snow removal and ice control, transporting materials or fuel, and providing traffic control by flagging. Selected applicants may be exposed to hazardous working conditions and inclement weather. The role also includes participation in a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program, with the requirement to obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six months of employment. Advancement opportunities are dependent on completed hours, proficiency, training, and maintaining a CDL. The WVDOT maintains over 35,000 miles of state roads, which may require employees to work irregular hours, shifts, weekends, and overtime, sometimes without prior notice.

Requirements

  • No formal education required.
  • No prior experience is required.
  • Ability to obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of employment.
  • Valid driver's license required.
  • Ability to diagnose minor mechanical problems and determine appropriate procedures for repair.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to learn from example and work cooperatively with others.
  • Ability to maintain routine records (timecards, repair work orders).

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of general safety procedures.
  • Knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of vehicles and other motor-driven equipment.
  • Knowledge of the operation of motor-driven equipment.
  • Skill in the use of tools and equipment used in the repair of motor-driven equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Driving a light truck or vehicle during regular operation as well as during snow removal and ice control (SRIC).
  • Operating various equipment such as a fork truck, end loader, skid steer, rollers, utility tractor, brush chipper, as well as various hand tools.
  • Answering telephone and radio calls during SRIC.
  • Transporting materials or fuel to equipment.
  • Providing traffic control by flagging on job sites.
  • Performing minor maintenance on the fleet of equipment and vehicles.
  • Plowing snow using a light truck.
  • Controlling brush and vegetation using hand tools and other equipment.
