About The Position

This position is classified-exempt and "at will." The Transportation Worker 1 Equipment Operator performs entry-level functions in the construction and maintenance of highways. This position will work on the Cenforce crew and be assigned to the Building and Grounds section of the Operations Division. Duties include driving light trucks or vehicles during regular operation and snow removal/ice control (SRIC), operating various equipment such as fork trucks, end loaders, skid steers, rollers, utility tractors, and brush chippers, and using various hand tools. Responsibilities may include transporting materials or fuel to equipment and providing traffic control by flagging on job sites. Selected applicants may be exposed to hazardous working conditions and inclement weather. Statewide weekly overnight travel is required. This position is statewide and requires extensive weekly statewide travel. The selected applicant will be placed in a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program. Progress through the apprenticeship program and opportunity for advancement is dependent upon hours completed, proficiency, training, and obtaining/maintaining a Commercial Driver's License (CDL). The WVDOT is responsible for the planning, construction, maintenance, and regulation of over 35,000 miles of state roads. This duty may necessitate employees working irregular hours, shifts, weekends, and more than 40 hours per week, occasionally without prior notice.

Requirements

  • No formal education required.
  • No prior experience is required.
  • Must obtain a commercial driver's license (CDL) within six (6) months of employment.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.
  • Knowledge of general safety procedures.
  • Knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of vehicles and other motor-driven equipment.
  • Knowledge of the operation of motor-driven equipment.
  • Skill in the use of tools and equipment used in the repair of motor-driven equipment.
  • Ability to diagnose minor mechanical problems and determine appropriate procedures for repair.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to learn from example and work cooperatively with others.
  • Ability to maintain routine records (timecards, repair work orders).

Responsibilities

  • Drive a light truck or vehicle during regular operation as well as during snow removal and ice control (SRIC).
  • Operate various equipment such as a fork truck, end loader, skid steer, rollers, utility tractor, brush chipper, as well as various hand tools.
  • Transport materials or fuel to equipment.
  • Provide traffic control by flagging on job sites.
  • Perform minor maintenance on the fleet of equipment and vehicles.
  • Answer telephone and radio calls during snow removal and ice control.
  • Control brush and vegetation using hand tools and other equipment.
  • Plow snow using a light truck.
