About The Position

This position is classified-exempt and "at will." The Transportation Worker 1 Equipment Operator will report to the Cabell County Headquarters and will work County and/or Expressway maintenance operations. This position, under general supervision, will perform entry-level functions, working in the construction and maintenance of highways. Duties include: Driving a light truck or vehicle during regular operation as well as during snow removal and ice control (SRIC). Operating various equipment such as a fork truck, end loader, skid steer, rollers, utility tractor, brush chipper, as well as various hand tools. May fill in answering telephone and radio calls during SRIC. May be responsible for transporting materials or fuel to equipment. Providing traffic control by flagging on job sites. Selected applicants may be exposed to hazardous working conditions and inclement weather. Performs other related duties as required. The selected applicant will be placed in a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program. Progress through the apprenticeship program, as well as the opportunity for advancement to a higher classification, is dependent upon hours completed, proficiency in work, training completed, as well as obtaining and maintaining a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). The WVDOT is responsible for the planning, construction, maintenance, and regulation of over 35,000 miles of state roads. This duty may necessitate employees working irregular hours, shifts, weekends, and more than 40 hours per week, occasionally without prior notice.

Requirements

  • No formal education required.
  • No prior experience is required.
  • Ability to maintain routine records (timecards, repair work orders).
  • Ability to learn from example and work cooperatively with others.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to diagnose minor mechanical problems and determine appropriate procedures for repair.
  • Skill in the use of tools and equipment used in the repair of motor-driven equipment.
  • Knowledge of the operation of motor-driven equipment.
  • Knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of vehicles and other motor-driven equipment.
  • Knowledge of general safety procedures.
  • A valid driver’s license is required.
  • A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) will be required within six (6) months of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Operate a light truck or vehicle.
  • Operate a forklift truck to load and unload trucks.
  • May operate Endloader, Skid Steer, Rollers, Utility Tractor, and Brush Chipper.
  • Control brush and vegetation using hand tools and other equipment.
  • Plow snow using a light truck.
  • Perform minor maintenance on the fleet of equipment and vehicles.
  • Transport fuel to the equipment.
  • Answer telephone and radio calls during snow removal and ice control.
