Supervisor, Transportation Shift

Capital Metropolitan Transportation Authority•Austin, TX
•Onsite

About The Position

The Transportation Shift Supervisor reports directly to the Supervisor, Rail Transportation and provides first-line floor supervision for Engineers and Conductors on an assigned shift, while also carrying crew-calling responsibility. The role ensures crews are safely, accurately, and consistently supervised and staffed in accordance with CapMetro operating rules, safety procedures, and applicable FRA requirements, including hours-of-service regulations (49 CFR Part 228). During peak crew-change windows, crew-calling duties are the primary focus. Outside those windows, floor supervision is the default duty. The position requires proficiency in both functions through cross-training so crew calling continues when another Transportation Shift Supervisor is unavailable. Established safeguards, including a second review by the Supervisor, Transportation for crew assignment decisions made immediately after a disciplinary action, are used to protect fairness and hours-of-service compliance. The position supervises daily shift operations, conducts ride checks and testing, coaches employees, responds to incidents, documents performance and compliance issues, and administers discipline consistent with CapMetro policy. It builds and manages the crew board, assigns crews within hours-of-service limits, manages the extra board, coordinates with the OCC, and maintains records for compliance and audit readiness. It also supports incident follow-up and CapMetro’s Safety Management Systems process. Work is performed in a rail yard, field, and dispatch/crew-office environment, with exposure to inclement weather, moving equipment, and other rail-yard hazards. The role requires sustained attention and time-critical decision-making, travel throughout field and rail-yard locations, and work at a CapMetro facility or field location at least four days per week. The position requires varying and rotating shifts, including days, nights, weekends, holidays, and peak crew-change windows. Regular and predictable attendance at the assigned work location is essential. Visa sponsorship is unavailable, and applicants must already be authorized to work in the United States. This is a security-sensitive position subject to annual background checks and an FTA safety-sensitive position requiring participation in the employer’s prohibited-substance testing program.
