About The Position

Metrolinx is connecting communities across the Greater Golden Horseshoe. Metrolinx operates GO Transit and UP Express, as well as the PRESTO fare payment system. We are also building new and improved rapid transit, including GO Expansion, Light Rail Transit routes, and major expansions to Toronto’s subway system, to get people where they need to go, better, faster and easier. Our Bus Scheduling Office reviews, plans, and schedules bus services for optimum and cost effective an utilization of drivers and bus equipment.

Requirements

  • Completion of a diploma in a related field - OR - completion of an apprenticeship program with trade certification
  • Demonstrated experience in reviewing, planning, and scheduling bus services for optimum and cost effective and utilization of drivers and bus equipment
  • Knowledge of legal and regulatory requirements governing delivery of bus transit services is an asset
  • Organizational, analytical, and time management skills to plan and schedule staff and equipment for optimum and cost effective transit service delivery, and develops plans and business cases for new and expanding services
  • Proficiency in computer applications including MS Office (e.g. Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Interpersonal and oral/written communication skills to prepare work and equipment schedules and guides detailing uses of bus equipment and driver requirements

Responsibilities

  • Develops and maintains detailed run guides and crew rosters that ensure optimum efficiency while maintaining a balanced level of work among bus drivers
  • Prepares guides detailing uses of bus equipment and driver requirements to assist in the maximization of resources at each regional facility
  • Prepares and maintains equipment cycling charts that identify bus equipment needs by type and location
  • Builds and maintains a detailed computerized database of all bus trips by type and day of service required to operate the Bus Operations Transit Operating System which includes driver payroll
  • Prepares and maintains detailed service changes in the Drivers’ Operating Timetable; transfers data to other departments to produce time-sensitive public timetables and related passenger bulletins
  • Prepares drivers’ daily assignments, determines vacation allotments, approves leave requests and other absences; plans, organizes, and participates in meetings with Bus Drivers, their Supervisors, and Union members to discuss and resolve scheduling issues
  • Investigates Customers Service Reports (CITs) and responds accordingly
  • Reviews public rail and system timetables with Information Services and verifies the contents of timetable related passenger bulletins; prepares Bus Operations Notices and Bulletins
  • Monitors, evaluates, and adjusts planned utilization of bus equipment and staff in conjunction with approved service changes to ensure that the required service levels operate efficiently and effectively
  • Develops plans and business cases for new and expanding services (e.g. ridership projections, resource requirements, collective bargaining processes, and operating cost estimates) that may affect staffing levels and work requirements
  • Investigates service alternatives by analyzing ridership and operating data and preparing detailed recommendations
  • Develops rosters and adjusts staff costs by determining full-time versus part-time drivers staffing compliments, and overtime costs versus four-day week crews
  • Investigates, reviews and analyses ridership, cost and operating data, and deciding which service alternatives to pursue and recommend
  • Reviews existing and proposed service levels to project the bus equipment and driver requirement for budgeting and other purposes
  • Develops cost analysis on matters pertaining to Bus Operations driver and vehicle requirements and utilization
  • Other duties as assigned
