About The Position

Develop and implement operational software parameters for routing schemes, routes, and schedules in compliance with laws, regulations, student assignment plans, and Board policy. Assign bus drivers to routes and special events, and assign students to appropriate and safe bus stops based on residence or childcare location.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school and four years of experience driving a school bus, including experience in planning and scheduling bus routes and operating an automated transportation system.
  • Valid and current California Class A or B Commercial Driver License with appropriate passenger, school bus, and air brake endorsements.
  • California Special Driver Certificate issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).
  • Valid Medical Examiner's Certificate.
  • Valid First Aid and CPR Certificate (when required) issued by an authorized agency.
  • Department of Justice fingerprint clearance through the California Highway Patrol.
  • Good DMV driving record and ability to maintain insurability under the District's vehicle insurance policy.
  • Subject to federal drug and alcohol testing requirements.
  • Knowledge of applicable laws, codes, rules, and regulations related to pupil transportation.
  • Knowledge of modern office practices, procedures, and equipment.
  • Knowledge of District policy and industry standards related to routine and student assignment.
  • Knowledge of Student Assignment Plan, District boundaries, and eligibility criteria.
  • Knowledge of health and safety regulations.
  • Knowledge of operation of a computer, automated transportation systems, and a two-way radio.
  • Knowledge of telephone techniques and etiquette.
  • Knowledge of record-keeping techniques.
  • Knowledge of interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy.
  • Knowledge of oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to plan, coordinate, and develop bus routes and schedules.
  • Ability to assign bus drivers and students to designated routes and special event trips.
  • Ability to review routes and schedules to accommodate changes.
  • Ability to read maps and utilize mapping programs.
  • Ability to maintain a variety of logs, records, and files.
  • Ability to interpret, apply, and explain laws, codes, rules, and regulations related to assigned activities.
  • Ability to operate a variety of office equipment including a computer and applicable software.
  • Ability to operate a two-way radio.

Responsibilities

  • Schedule bus drivers and vehicles for effective and efficient utilization; establish routes and schedules; review and update routes and schedules to accommodate changes.
  • Assist in the installation and use of transportation operational software; troubleshoot and resolve software and hardware issues; install updates and re-install programs.
  • Train new and temporary staff on department procedures, protocols, and software use; assign access and login codes.
  • Provide reports and data to the Transportation Manager to improve student safety and program efficiency.
  • Analyze proposals from school boards, administrators, and citizen committees to evaluate program impact, cost, and feasibility.
  • Assign regular and special education students to appropriate and safest bus stops based on residence or childcare/afterschool program location.
  • Investigate, report on, and resolve student incidents, vehicle accidents, and student complaints.
  • Answer telephones, direct inquiries, place calls for information, and resolve pupil transportation issues.
  • Communicate with faculty, District departments, parents, the public, City personnel regarding road improvements, and the Director regarding school zoning changes.
  • Monitor bus activity using GPS software and Sigalert traffic reports to notify drivers of road conditions.
  • Prepare, implement, and communicate emergency routing scenarios.
  • Operate a two-way radio to communicate with drivers regarding schedule changes, breakdowns, accidents, emergencies, and road conditions.
  • Prepare and maintain logs, records, and files related to transportation; maintain student assignment software and District vehicle inventory.
  • Operate office equipment including copier, fax machine, computer, and applicable software.
  • Attend conferences and user group meetings regarding technology updates in the transportation field.
  • Substitute for the dispatcher when absent.
  • Drive a school bus as needed.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
