About The Position

The Agency of Transportation is seeking a Transportation Operations Technician II. This position is responsible for various tasks related to highway maintenance, such as repairing guardrails, cutting trees/brush, patching roads, picking litter, ditching, and more. In the winter months, this position will also assist with plowing and salting, and overtime may be required. This is an entry-level position for maintenance work within the Agency of Transportation (VTrans) on the Bennington Team. The Transportation Operations Technician II performs various laboring and semi-skilled tasks while being closely supervised by higher-level maintenance workers. As the Technician completes training and gains skills, greater work independence is expected. The Transportation Operations Technician II also gains knowledge in the use of hand and power tools. On-the-job training is provided and there are many opportunities to apply knowledge and developed skills to road maintenance and repair work. The work is performed under the supervision of an AOT Area Maintenance Supervisor or higher-level maintenance worker. These entry-level positions offer excellent benefits, opportunities for career development, and a CDL training program. This position is eligible for a sign-on and retention bonus of up to $2000! Newly hired CDL and non-CDL holders who are hired into permanent maintenance worker or mechanic job on or after July 13, 2025 are eligible. Although the full salary range for this position is provided, new hires are typically made at the salary range minimum.

Requirements

  • One (1) year of work experience in construction, equipment operation, or related manual labor INCLUDING EITHER one season of operating a snowplow with wings OR six (6) months of operating medium or heavy equipment, such as graders, excavators, and backhoes.
  • Upon successful completion of original probation as a Transportation Operations Technician I AND possession of a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with tanker endorsement.
  • A Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required.
  • An incumbent must live within reasonable proximity of assigned workstation.
  • Possession of a Class A Commercial Driver's License with Tanker Endorsement is required within the first six months of employment.
  • An incumbent must complete all VTTC required coursework within one (1) year or be enrolled.
  • Non-original probationary employees must obtain a required CDL license prior to the completion of six (6) months of service in the position.
  • Must be available for considerable overtime during heavy snowfall or other emergencies.
  • May be required to report to work outside of their work schedule/ area and must be reachable by phone.
  • Must be able to use tools and lift materials commonly used in maintenance work.
  • Participation in a random drug and alcohol-testing program is required.
