About The Position

The Agency of Transportation is seeking a Transportation Operations Technician II. This position is responsible for various tasks related to highway maintenance, such as repairing guardrails, cutting trees/brush, patching roads, picking litter, ditching, and more. In the winter months, this position will also assist with plowing and salting, and overtime may be required. Additionally, this position may assist in vehicle and equipment maintenance. The Transportation Operations Technician I/II performs a number of skilled tasks while being closely supervised by higher-level transportation operations technicians. As the incumbent completes training and gains skills, greater work independence is expected. The incumbent gains skills and knowledge in the use of hand, power tools, heavy equipment, technology (such as IPads, computers, etc.), state and federal regulations and through required on-the-job training, advances that knowledge and applies these developed skills to road maintenance and repair work. Newly hired CDL and non-CDL holders who are hired into permanent maintenance worker or mechanic job on or after July 13, 2025 are eligible. Requirements

  • One (1) year of work experience in construction, equipment operation, or related manual labor INCLUDING EITHER one season of operating a snowplow with wings OR six (6) months of operating medium or heavy equipment, such as graders, excavators, and backhoes.
  • Upon successful completion of original probation as a Transportation Operations Technician I AND possession of a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with tanker endorsement.
  • A Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required.
  • An incumbent must live within reasonable proximity of assigned workstation.
  • Possession of a Class A Commercial Driver's License with Tanker Endorsement is required within the first six months of employment.
  • An incumbent must complete all VTTC required coursework within one (1) year or be enrolled.
  • Non-original probationary employees must obtain a required CDL license prior to the completion of six (6) months of service in the position.
  • Must provide detailed employment information for the past 10 years for commercial motor vehicle operators.
  • Ability to withstand exposure to extreme outdoor weather.
  • Ability to use tools and lift materials commonly used in maintenance work.
  • Participation in a random drug and alcohol-testing program is required.
