About The Position

The Agency of Transportation is seeking a Transportation Operations Technician I. This position is responsible for various tasks related to highway maintenance, such as repairing guardrails, cutting trees/brush, patching roads, picking litter, ditching, and more. In the winter months, this position will also assist with plowing and salting, and overtime may be required. The Transportation Operations Technician performs a number of skilled tasks while being closely supervised by higher-level transportation operations technicians. As the incumbent completes training and gains skills, greater work independence is expected. The incumbent gains skills and knowledge in the use of hand, power tools, heavy equipment, technology (such as IPads, computers, etc.), state and federal regulations and through required on-the-job training, advances that knowledge and applies these developed skills to road maintenance and repair work. These entry-level positions offer excellent benefits, opportunities for career development, and a CDL training program. This position is eligible for a sign-on and retention bonus of up to $2000! Newly hired CDL and non-CDL holders who are hired into permanent maintenance worker or mechanic job on or after July 13, 2025 are eligible. Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • A valid driver's license is required
  • Must live within reasonable proximity of assigned workstation
  • Possession of a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required for the successful completion of original probation
  • Must complete all VTTC required coursework within six (6) months or be enrolled
  • Participation in a random drug and alcohol-testing program is required prior to operation of vehicles or operating equipment
