About The Position

The Agency of Transportation is seeking a Transportation Operations Technician II. This position is responsible for various tasks related to highway maintenance, such as repairing guardrails, cutting trees/brush, patching roads, picking litter, ditching, and more. In the winter months, this position will also assist with plowing and salting, and overtime may be required. Additionally, this position may assist in vehicle and equipment maintenance. This is an entry-level position for maintenance work within the Agency of Transportation (VTrans) on the St Johnsbury Team. The Transportation Operations Technician II, is responsible for routine maintenance and repair work. Duties typically require the use of a variety of tools and vehicles. Overtime work is required, particularly during the winter months, and is considered a condition of employment. A newly hired employee must complete all VTTC training requirements for the Job Development Plan (JDP) and demonstrate knowledge and skills in a minimum of six areas of maintenance or construction activities. The work is performed under the supervision of an AOT Area Maintenance Supervisor or higher-level maintenance worker. These positions have many opportunities for career development. Requirements

One (1) year of work experience in construction, equipment operation, or related manual labor INCLUDING EITHER one season of operating a snowplow with wings OR six (6) months of operating medium or heavy equipment, such as graders, excavators, and backhoes.
OR Upon successful completion of original probation as a Transportation Operations Technician I AND possession of a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with tanker endorsement.
A Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required.
An incumbent must live within reasonable proximity of assigned workstation.
Possession of a Class A Commercial Driver's License with Tanker Endorsement is required within the first six months of employment.
An incumbent must complete all VTTC required coursework within one (1) year or be enrolled.
Non-original probationary employees must obtain a required CDL license prior to the completion of six (6) months of service in the position.
Ability to withstand exposure to extreme outdoor weather.
Availability for considerable overtime during heavy snowfall or other emergencies.
Requirement to report to work outside of their work schedule/ area and must be reachable by phone.
Ability to use tools and lift materials commonly used in maintenance work.
Awareness of normal dangers associated with work on or near heavy equipment, hazardous materials, and debris from roadside litter.
Potential exposure to blood or airborne pathogens.
Awareness of hazards present when working on roads with moving traffic.
Participation in a random drug and alcohol-testing program is required.
Provide detailed employment information for the past 10 years for CDL application requirements.
