Become a Transportation Equipment Operator A Trainee with the Department of Transportation and take the first step toward becoming a skilled equipment operator. Requirements

  • Possession of a valid Pennsylvania non-commercial Class C Driver’s License or equivalent.
  • Possession of a valid Pennsylvania Class A or B Commercial Driver Learner’s Permit on the first day of work.
  • Possession of a valid Medical Examiner's Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations on the first day of work.
  • Must be able to demonstrate successful operation of equipment with a manual transmission within the probationary period.
  • Subject to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with Federal Regulations.
  • Must be able to perform essential job functions.
  • A conditional offer of employment will require a drug screening.
  • A conditional offer of employment will require submission of criminal history reports.

Responsibilities

  • Train to operate heavy trucks and loaders and complete required safety checks
  • Learn to use hand and power tools for maintenance and repair activities
  • Follow safety procedures, report hazards, and help protect the work crew and public
  • Perform physical work such as cutting brush, cleaning culverts, and installing signs
  • Make basic adjustments, report equipment issues, and keep tools in proper condition
  • Carry out environmental protection requirements during maintenance work
