About The Position

The State of Connecticut, Department of Transportation (DOT) is seeking a Transportation Engineer 1 (Engineering) for the Traffic Signals, Electrical Section in the Bureau of Engineering and Construction, Division of Traffic Engineering in Newington, CT. This role involves designing and reviewing electrical elements for traffic control signals and other electrical needs on State roadways. The position requires preparing plans using CAD software, specifications, and estimates for electrical elements related to transportation projects. Coordination with utilities on Traffic Engineering signal projects and ensuring compliance with NESC, NEC, and PURA codes/regulations is essential. The engineer will also review and approve product data submittals, conduct field inspections, and prepare power letters to determine electricity costs for State-owned signal equipment. Additionally, the role involves providing technical assistance in researching and developing specifications for new technology. Applicants must be available to travel for training, conferences, meetings, and field reviews, potentially outside of normal working hours, and must possess and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator's license. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering and one (1) year of experience in transportation engineering or transportation construction engineering.
  • Possession of a valid Motor Vehicle Operator's license.
  • Availability to travel for training, conferences, meetings, field reviews, etc. both within and outside of normal working hours, when necessary.

Nice To Haves

  • Possession of an accredited bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering
  • Experience preparing plans, specifications and estimates for traffic signal projects and reviewing traffic signal designs prepared by consultants, ensuring code and utility regulations compliance
  • Experience managing traffic signal installation projects including coordination with utilities
  • Experience establishing traffic signal design practices, and maintaining and updating traffic design specifications
  • Experience with CTDOT Standard Specifications and CTDOT Design Manuals
  • Experience using CAD and other engineering design software, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Project and Microsoft Access
  • Experience with presentation skills and oral and written communication skills
  • Experience efficiently managing large workloads
  • Completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam

Responsibilities
