About The Position

The State of Ohio is hiring for a Transportation Engineer 1 or Transportation Engineer 2 position within District 6. The selected candidate will participate in ODOT’s Transportation Civil Engineering Program, which includes a 12-month training plan and scheduled rotations through core engineering disciplines such as Planning & Engineering, Construction, and Highway Maintenance. This role offers a comprehensive introduction to civil engineering, opportunities to collaborate with professional engineers, and hands-on training essential for career advancement within ODOT. The State of Ohio operates as a drug-free workplace, and this position may be subject to additional restrictions. It is eligible for overtime based on FLSA Standards, and new hires are required to complete a one-year probationary period. A criminal background check is mandatory for the final candidate, and all applicants must be authorized to work in the United States, as employment visa sponsorship is not available for positions with the Ohio Department of Transportation.

Requirements

  • For Transportation Engineer 1: Bachelor's degree in engineering
  • For Transportation Engineer 1: Accepted for Basic Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (EIT exam) by Ohio Board of Registration for Professional Engineers & Surveyors
  • For Transportation Engineer 2: Valid certificate as Engineer-In-Training issued or accepted as equivalent by Ohio Board of Registration for Professional Engineers & Surveyors; 12 months experience as Transportation Engineer 1, 85641
  • Alternatively for Transportation Engineer 2: Bachelor's degree in engineering; valid certificate as Engineer-In-Training issued or accepted as equivalent by Ohio Board of Registration for Professional Engineers & Surveyors; 2 years engineering related experience
  • Job Skills: Civil Engineering
  • Authorized to work in the United States (sponsorship for an employment visa is not currently available)
  • Undergo a criminal background check
  • Adhere to the State of Ohio Drug-Free Workplace Policy

Responsibilities

  • Complete ODOT’s Transportation Civil Engineering Program, including a 12-month training plan and scheduled rotation through the department’s core engineering disciplines: Planning & Engineering, Construction and Highway Maintenance
  • Receive a thorough introduction to the three core civil engineering disciplines
  • Work alongside ODOT professional engineers
  • Receive hands-on transportation training and experience needed to further your career as an engineer with ODOT
