About The Position

As a Transportation Construction Inspector with the Department of Transportation, you will help ensure that roadway construction follows proper rules and guidelines. This role will give you the chance to see projects up close and to ensure work is done correctly and safely. Your efforts will support public safety and strengthen transportation infrastructure. Requirements

  • One year as an Engineering Technician (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration)
  • Two years as a Transportation Technician or Construction Cost Technician 1 (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration)
  • Three years of experience in highway or bridge surveying, design, construction, or inspection work
  • Three years of experience in quality control of materials or building or construction industry experience, which includes reading and interpreting blueprints, plans, or schematics
  • One year of construction inspection experience, and an associate’s degree in civil engineering, mechanical engineering, geotechnical engineering, surveying engineering technology, or a closely related engineering technology
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training
  • Possession of an active non-commercial Pennsylvania Class C Driver’s License or equivalent
  • Meet the PA residency requirement

Responsibilities

  • Review ongoing and completed permit work to verify compliance with Department regulations
  • Inspect placement of concrete, drainage materials and other required construction components
  • Evaluate construction plans and determine when specialist assistance is needed
  • Identify violations and prescribe corrective actions in a fair and documented manner
  • Confirm sight distances, setbacks and roadway conditions through independent field checks
  • Work with applicants, utilities, and municipal officials to explain standards and resolve issues
