An employee in this class is responsible for organizing and overseeing the daily operations of the transit program for the citizens of the County. Work also involves providing customer service to the public in person and over the telephone; scheduling transit appointments for passengers; developing routes; scheduling drivers for vans covering fixed and variable routes serving the public, elderly and disabled citizens; supervision of transit vehicle drivers; conducting driver training; validating transit driver daily paperwork; coordinating fleet maintenance and repair; maintaining accurate reports and reports; monitoring continual operations and safety; maintaining public contact with citizens and service agencies; and ensuring that services are provided in accordance with eligibility guidelines. Dispatching involves working with van drivers and riders, coordinating numerous rider changes, locating backup drivers, monitoring routes to ensure efficiency, and adjusting routes as needed. Duties also include maintaining accurate records and preparation of a variety of required State reports including vehicle utilization, mileage, and number of clients served. Work also involves a special understanding of the needs and behavior of clients served. Work involves extensive public contact with citizens requesting services and agency representatives requiring tact, diplomacy, multi-tasking and coordination skills.
