About The Position

The Transit Supervisor – Nights is responsible for assisting with the daily operations of the campus transit system, monitoring routes, coordinating drivers and buses, assisting customers, supervising charters, and responding to accidents for the night hours. This supervisor will be responsible for making all operational decisions from 4:30 pm to 1:00 am, Monday – Friday.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Four years in progressively responsible positions including two years of supervisory and customer service experience.
  • Valid vehicle operator’s license and good driving record.
  • Must be able to obtain State of Texas class “B” vehicle operator’s license (Commercial Driver’s License with passenger endorsement and air brakes endorsement) within 60 days of employment.
  • Ability to work with little to no supervision/oversight due to late shift schedule.
  • Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, database, and presentation applications.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to handle busy phone, 2-way radio, and office traffic, and to perform time-critical tasks reliably.
  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.

  • Ability to walk distances of up to a ½-mile unassisted between bus assignments.
  • Ability to bend and stoop to conduct pre-trip bus inspection.

  • Must be able to lift and move medium-weight objects, bend, stoop, and assist and/or move people with disabilities as they board/off-board the bus and other campus vehicles.
  • Ability to work outdoors exposed to various weather conditions, potential allergens, elevated noise levels, and heat.
  • This position is security sensitive.
  • This position requires compliance with state and federal laws/codes and Texas A&M University System/TAMU policies, regulations, rules, and procedures.
  • All tasks and job responsibilities must be performed safely without injury to self or others in compliance with System and University safety requirements.
  • Employees in this position will be required to drive state vehicle to travel to various parts of campus and are considered essential when the University declares an emergency, campus closure, class cancellations, etc.
  • This position is covered by DOT regulations and will be included in a random drug and alcohol testing pool.

Responsibilities

  • Monitors all radio traffic.
  • Monitors and updates the daily log of information such as all necessary events including late drivers, no shows, any abandonment of workstations, sick drivers, bus swaps, mechanical problems, and discipline issues.
  • Coordinates between the office and field for driver shortages, lates, sicks, no shows, abandonment of workstations, deployment plans, bus swaps and other policy issues.
  • Distributes to drivers their route folders, bus assignment information, passenger counts, radios to vans, maps, credit card packets, window signs, etc.
  • Responsible for all closing duties including all preparation for the next day’s operations including coordinating staffing changes, responding to accidents, bus assignments, and coordination with maintenance to have equipment for use and all dispatch and supervisory operations that are ongoing at night.
  • Supervises all Transit activities during the night shift.
  • Responsible for reconnaissance of traffic situations and operational stability that may influence driver movements to help ensure efficiency; times and spaces out buses and assists drivers and customers with any questions they may have about routes, procedures, and operations.
  • Keeps track of missing bus stop signs for replacement.
  • Monitors effectiveness and efficiency in customer service and operational soundness.
  • Assumes ownership of projects.
  • Supervises and monitors drivers for adherence of policies and procedures to include ensuring that all State laws, University rules, Transportation Services policies, and expectations are being adhered to correctly.
  • Documents and distributes action forms to drivers.
  • Responsible for approving time worked and leave requests for full-time and part-time drivers.
  • Expected to drive, dispatch, mobile supervise and train new drivers.
  • Monitors activities at the Transit Office and on the lot.
  • Inputs all necessary data entry required by management to include charter assignments, passenger counts, driver memos, and information to be placed on “A-Frames”.
  • Sorts all incoming and outgoing mail and reroutes it to the appropriate manager, shop, or facility.
  • Updates the route board, desktop paperwork, and charter summary sheet for changes to charters, routes, and downed buses as changes occur.
  • Assigns buses.
  • Processes all incoming maintenance sheets.
  • Issues vehicles to staff for use.
  • Distributes charter paperwork to drivers, informs them of bus assignment and answers questions.
  • Ensures paperwork is properly completed and processed in a timely manner.
  • As the night closer, answers phone calls and handles all administrative duties during the night shift.
  • May be required to work Saturday home football games as needed.
