About The Position

WSP is seeking a full-time Early Career Transit and Rail Engineer for its Chicago, IL office. This role involves providing local technical assistance for the design, development, and construction of transit and rail infrastructure projects and systems in both public and private sectors. Responsibilities include research, design, concept development, and construction of various transit and rail elements such as track systems, alignments, crossings, tunnels, bridges, utility relocation, drainage, earthworks, grading, information modeling, maintenance facilities, and power substations. The role also requires generating accurate documentation and ensuring work meets or exceeds industry standards for design, safety, and functionality.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, or closely related discipline.
  • 0 to 1 years of relevant post-education experience.
  • Excellent research skills with an analytical mindset.
  • Familiarity with process and concepts for design/build.
  • Familiarity with relevant engineering and construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
  • Competent interpersonal and communication skills for interacting with diverse audiences.
  • Proficient self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization skills in a dynamic work environment.
  • Ability to work independently under general supervision, and as part of a team.
  • Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, spreadsheets, technology, and tools.
  • Familiarity with discipline-specific design software (i.e., MicroStation, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, ArcGIS, InRoads, Geopak, GeoSlope, ANSYS, STADD, HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS).
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety, drug/alcohol, and harassment policies.
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • Engineer in Training Certification.
  • Prior internship related to the degree of study and the specific engineering discipline.
  • Membership in and/or active participation in local professional practice organizations.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with collecting, compiling, and analyzing data from physical work sites, surveys, blueprints, GIS data, subsurface utility information, maps, geotechnical data, and other matrices for project development, design, and construction.
  • Perform basic professional transit and rail engineering work, including research and inspections of proposed and existing site conditions, resources, buildings, infrastructure, and transportation corridors to ensure conformance with applicable rules, standards, and permits.
  • Undertake routine engineering functions and provide entry-level technical assistance on design requirements and operating strategies to ensure the safety and functionality of end-users, systems, and infrastructure.
  • Verify site characteristics and provide basic technical assistance on engineering, design, and construction issues.
  • Generate complete, accurate, and concise documentation using electronic systems, drawings, and field/work site notebooks/logs.
  • Comply with safety guidelines and site-specific procedures, including location data, statistical documentation, engineering studies and surveys, and construction.
  • Complete training on assigned tasks.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, adhering to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
