About The Position

The Training Officer is responsible for the delivery, coordination, and documentation of required staff training in accordance with National Detention Standards (NDS) 2025, contractual obligations, and Acuity International policies. This position functions as a facility trainer and instructional specialist, ensuring personnel receive required pre-service, in-service, refresher, and specialty training necessary to support safety, security, detainee rights, and operational compliance. The Training Officer performs instructional duties under the direction of the Training Officer Supervisor or designated facility leadership and does not have program-level or supervisory authority. All services shall be provided in accordance with established standards, principles and ethics of the profession, applicable professional specialty organizations, and the high-quality standard for which Acuity International is recognized. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Criminal Justice, Public Administration, or related field.
  • Minimum 3–5 years of experience in training, instruction, or facilitation, preferably in detention, corrections, law enforcement, or other regulated environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver structured training to adult learners.
  • Working knowledge of detention standards and compliance requirements.
  • Strong communication, presentation, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain necessary clearances and credentials required for access to detention facilities.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain favorable background investigations.
  • Meet the requirements of the contract for all immunizations.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, resided in the U.S. for 3 years in the past 5 years.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Must complete all required training.
  • Ability to adapt to sudden changes and flexibility in work requirements to include potential shift changes based on operational needs and/or command priorities.

Nice To Haves

  • Certified instructor credentials (e.g., CPR/AED, First Aid, CPI, defensive tactics) preferred.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish or other relevant languages) preferred.
  • CPR/First Aid Instructor certification.
  • Has undergone a federal investigation at the level of Tier 2 or higher; has been granted favorable suitability/eligibility and has not had a break in service for more than 24 months.
  • Detention center experience.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver approved training curricula and lesson plans in accordance with NDS 2025 requirements and facility training schedules.
  • Conduct instructor-led, practical, and scenario-based training for staff, including but not limited to: Pre-service and annual refresher training, Detainee rights and responsibilities, Emergency preparedness and response, Crisis Intervention and defensive techniques (as authorized), Cultural competency and trauma-informed care, PREA, sexual abuse prevention, and reporting requirements.
  • Apply adult learning principles and standardized instructional methods to ensure comprehension and retention.
  • Coordinate training sessions, classrooms, rosters, schedules, and instructional resources.
  • Support onboarding training for newly hired staff and subcontractor personnel.
  • Assist department leadership with training logistics to minimize operational disruption.
  • Coordinate required external or specialized training such as CPR/AED, First Aid, CPI, or disturbance control, as applicable.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and complete training records for all personnel in accordance with NDS 2025 documentation standards.
  • Prepare and update training rosters, attendance logs, test results, certifications, and instructor sign-offs.
  • Ensure training data is entered into designated tracking systems and maintained for audit readiness.
  • Promptly notify supervisory staff of missing, expired, or deficient training requirements.
  • Ensure training delivery aligns with approved curricula, lesson plans, and contractual requirements.
  • Administer assessments, skills evaluations, and knowledge checks to measure training effectiveness.
  • Identify training gaps, comprehension issues, and instructional challenges and report findings to the Training Officer Supervisor.
  • Support inspections, contract oversight visits, and audits by producing training documentation and explaining instructional processes upon request.
  • Prepare training rooms, equipment, audiovisual aids, and materials prior to instruction.
  • Maintain accountability of training supplies and report damaged or missing equipment.
  • Ensure training environments meet safety and security requirements for a detention setting.
  • Delivers and documents training but does not develop training policy or establish program governance.
  • Does not supervise personnel or conduct staff performance evaluations.
  • Implements training schedules and curricula as approved by the Training Officer Supervisor or facility leadership.
  • Escalates compliance deficiencies, training shortfalls, and emergent needs through the established chain of command.
