Union Pacific Train Crew employees provide the safe and timely movement of customers’ freight. No previous railroad experience is required; the company provides a 14-week training program that includes classroom and on-the-job training. Attendance throughout training and successful completion of all exams are required for continued employment. As employees progress, they may have the opportunity to apply for engine service and become a Class 1 Locomotive Engineer. After training, employees work in road or yard service according to their territory and seniority. Road service may involve travel between locations and time away from the home terminal; Union Pacific provides lodging for such assignments. Yard and local service crews work with an engineer or by remote control to classify cars from inbound trains and build outbound trains. This is a seniority-based role, and assignments may cover locations other than the one hired for. Employees may be assigned to on-call work 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Work hours and days off vary, and employees may be on call at nights, on weekends, and on holidays. Temporary furloughs are possible based on business volumes. The initial-year earnings are described as around $80,000, with potential for higher earnings as employees advance. The role requires compliance with railroad safety and operating rules and Federal Railroad Administration regulations. Employees are subject to random drug and alcohol testing, reasonable-suspicion testing, and post-accident testing when applicable. A Physical Ability Test is required before employment consideration, separate from the medical exam. Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States without company sponsorship.
