About The Position

The Tradesperson, Technician, and Sr Technician roles are field positions within the Stormwater Operations Division, working under the supervision of the Crew Leader - Stormwater Operations. These positions are responsible for operating and maintaining assigned equipment to perform drainage maintenance, street sweeping, and related field operations that protect Mansfield's stormwater infrastructure. The Tradesperson is an entry-level role requiring no prior experience, while the Technician and Sr Technician roles require increasing levels of experience and responsibility, including potential leadership and training duties for the Sr Technician. These are hands-on field roles applying knowledge of equipment operation and maintenance practices to keep the stormwater system functioning reliably for the community.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Texas Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Tanker endorsement, or ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire.
  • Ability to assist in completing drainage, street sweeping, and vegetation management activities.
  • Ability to learn the proper operation of assigned equipment.
  • Ability to safely work around heavy equipment while supporting crew members in completing assigned tasks.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors and crew members regarding assigned tasks and the proper use of tools and equipment.
  • Ability to identify job site hazards and take appropriate preventive action to protect crew members and the public.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience operating equipment for drainage maintenance (Technician).
  • Two (2) years of experience operating equipment for drainage maintenance, including experience directing or guiding crew members in their duties (Sr Technician).

Nice To Haves

  • No prior experience required (Tradesperson).
  • One (1) year of related maintenance experience preferred (Tradesperson).
  • Department and State of Texas certifications in Public Works-related fields preferred (Tradesperson & Technician).
  • Additional training or experience in a related field, or Department and State of Texas certifications in Public Works-related fields, preferred (Sr Technician).

Responsibilities

  • Complete assigned tasks related to storm drain maintenance.
  • Operate a street sweeper appropriately to maintain clean streets.
  • Operate outdoor power equipment to maintain vegetation in uneven terrain environments.
  • Use preventive maintenance and repair procedures to extend equipment life and support departmental readiness.
  • Demonstrate general use of hand tools and technical skills in the performance of assigned duties.
  • Identify job site hazards and take preventive action to protect crew members and the general public.
  • Relay customer complaints to the Crew Leader or Field Supervisor promptly.
  • Operate heavy equipment to complete drainage maintenance needs, including pipe separation repair, channel regrading, inlet and pipe cleaning, and sedimentation removal from culverts.
  • Assist with unloading and sorting materials collected from the public at the Environmental Collection Center.
  • Train crew members in the proper operation of heavy equipment (Sr Technician only).
  • Participate in complex work-site decisions (Sr Technician only).
  • Assist in maintaining accurate work orders, equipment, and inventory records (Sr Technician only).
  • Coordinate with other department staff and outside contractors for work related to drainage infrastructure maintenance (Sr Technician only).
