About The Position

The Tradesperson - Stormwater Operations is an entry-level field position within the Stormwater Operations Division, working under the direct supervision of the Crew Leader - Stormwater Operations. This position assists with drainage maintenance, street sweeping, and vegetation management that support Mansfield's stormwater infrastructure. This is an entry-level field role requiring no prior experience. The employee applies basic knowledge of safety requirements, equipment operation, and tools and materials to complete assigned tasks under direct supervision, with the opportunity to build toward more advanced stormwater operations roles. The Technician - Stormwater Operations is a field position within the Stormwater Operations Division, working under the supervision of the Crew Leader - Stormwater Operations. This position operates and maintains assigned equipment to perform drainage maintenance, street sweeping, and related field operations that protect Mansfield's stormwater infrastructure. This is a hands-on field role, applying general knowledge of heavy equipment operation and drainage maintenance practices to keep the stormwater system functioning reliably for the community. The Sr Technician - Stormwater Operations is a field position within the Stormwater Operations Division, working under the supervision of the Crew Leader - Stormwater Operations. This position operates and maintains assigned equipment to perform drainage maintenance, street sweeping, and related field operations that protect Mansfield's stormwater infrastructure. This is a senior-level field role, applying in-depth knowledge of heavy equipment operation and drainage maintenance practices to complete complex work-site decisions, train other crew members, and participate in crew scheduling and planning. This position also fills the role of the Crew Leader - Stormwater Operations during absences.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Texas Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Tanker endorsement, or ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire.
  • Ability to assist in completing drainage, street sweeping, and vegetation management activities.
  • Ability to learn the proper operation of assigned equipment, and to safely work around heavy equipment while supporting crew members in completing assigned tasks.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors and crew members regarding assigned tasks and the proper use of tools and equipment.
  • Ability to identify job site hazards and take appropriate preventive action to protect crew members and the public.
  • Valid Texas Commercial Class A Driver's License with Tanker endorsement, or ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience operating equipment for drainage maintenance.
  • Two (2) years of experience operating equipment for drainage maintenance, including experience directing or guiding crew members in their duties.
  • Ability to analyze problems, plan solutions, and participate in difficult or complex work-site decisions.
  • Skill in the operation of assigned heavy equipment, and the ability to safely work around heavy equipment while supporting coworkers in completing assigned tasks.

Nice To Haves

  • One (1) year of related maintenance experience preferred.
  • Department and State of Texas certifications in Public Works-related fields preferred.
  • Additional training or experience in a related field, or Department and State of Texas certifications in Public Works-related fields, preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Complete assigned tasks with supervision and direction related to storm drain maintenance.
  • Operate a street sweeper appropriately to maintain clean streets.
  • Operate outdoor power equipment to maintain vegetation in uneven terrain environments.
  • Use preventive maintenance and repair procedures to extend equipment life and support departmental readiness.
  • Demonstrate general use of hand tools and technical skills in the performance of assigned duties.
  • Identify job site hazards and take preventive action to protect crew members and the general public. Maintain a high standard of safety, conduct, and job performance.
  • Relay customer complaints to the Crew Leader or Field Supervisor promptly.
  • Operate heavy equipment to complete drainage maintenance needs, including pipe separation repair, channel regrading, inlet and pipe cleaning, and sedimentation removal from culverts.
  • Operate power equipment to maintain vegetation in drainage areas.
  • Safely operate and maintain all assigned equipment.
  • Assist with unloading and sorting materials collected from the public at the Environmental Collection Center.
  • Use preventive maintenance and repair practices to extend equipment life and support departmental readiness.
  • Identify job site hazards and take preventive action to protect staff and the general public.
  • Train crew members in the proper operation of heavy equipment.
  • Promote the division's goals; lead by example; and participate in complex work-site decisions. Assist in maintaining accurate work orders, equipment, and inventory records.
  • Coordinate with other department staff and outside contractors for work related to drainage infrastructure maintenance.
