About The Position

A Tradesperson Class 1 in the OCS department supports the high-reliability, high-volume manufacture of packaged fiber Bragg gratings for subsea telecommunications. The role changes the refractive index in optical fiber to meet spectral specifications through activities such as operating free-propagating laser systems, splicing optical fiber, interpreting optical measurements, and performing iterative processes. The Tradesperson uses troubleshooting and reasoning skills to produce high-quality fiber Bragg gratings. The position supports one or more workstations or cells with minimal supervision, maintains process controls, and follows Lean Daily Management targets and 5S practices. It includes aligning and operating laser writing rigs, splicing and testing gratings, interpreting results, adjusting equipment, and using trim-rig lasers to spot-anneal gratings. The role may train peers and lead Lean Daily Management activities. Overtime may be required based on business need, and regular attendance is required.

Requirements

  • High school diploma.
  • Two or more years of related experience in fiber handling and fiber-optic splicing is strongly preferred.
  • Optical test and measurement experience is highly preferred.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and adjust free-propagating laser systems based on spectral responses of fiber Bragg gratings.
  • Proficient computer skills, including operating complex LabVIEW GUIs, interfacing with a MySQL database, finding documents in an online library, and using Microsoft Office and general computer applications.
  • Understanding of Lean Manufacturing practices.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and a positive communication style.
  • Math skills including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to apply basic troubleshooting skills and make sound decisions.
  • Ability to respond to changes in responsibility and multiple assignments throughout the day.
  • Good hand-eye coordination and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work any shift, including nights and weekends.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate's degree.
  • Two or more years of related experience in fiber handling and fiber-optic splicing.
  • Optical test and measurement experience.
  • Ability to read and understand optical specifications.

Responsibilities

  • Support day-to-day operation of one or more workstations or cells with minimal supervision, including understanding technical requirements, maintaining process controls, and supporting Lean Daily Management targets and 5S practices.
  • Perform and verify daily alignment of complex super Gaussian laser beam systems (Writing Rigs).
  • Operate Writing Rigs to meet production demand while maintaining optical quality in a high-reliability, high-volume manufacturing environment.
  • Train peers on one or more processes.
  • Troubleshoot issues involving the optical measurement system, external optics, dither stage, phase mask, and related equipment.
  • Splice and test optical gratings, interpret test results, and adjust the Writing Rig as necessary.
  • Operate trim-rig lasers to spot-anneal optical gratings to specification.
  • Meet workstation quality and delivery thresholds.
  • Suggest process improvements to the PIM process and provide feedback on Lean Daily Management communication boards; may lead Lean Daily Management activities.
  • Follow verbal and written instructions, accept increased responsibility, and remain accountable for actions.
  • Maintain a good safety record, understand behavioral-based safety initiatives, and communicate unsafe situations.
