About The Position

Fern is a leading company in the trade show and expo service industry, with operations in over 200 cities across the United States. We are seeking an Exhibit Designer to join our Creative Team. The Exhibit Designer will be responsible for the structural design and detailing of modular systems, custom builds, and engineered elements for exhibits, events, and environments. This role involves translating creative design concepts into practical, buildable solutions that adhere to brand, safety, and budget requirements. The designer will act as a technical lead and mentor, collaborating with conceptual and technical teams to ensure structures are innovative, functional, and efficiently fabricated. The position reports to the Vice President, Creative Services & Design and may be performed remotely with limited travel.

Requirements

  • At least 3 years of structural design/detailing experience in exhibits, events, architectural, or custom fabrication industries.
  • Expert proficiency in AutoCAD (2D & 3D).
  • Strong understanding of modular fabrication systems and materials.
  • Ability to visualize in 3D and foresee potential build challenges.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to develop creative, buildable solutions.
  • Strong communication skills for cross-team collaboration.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Inventor, SolidWorks, or other parametric modeling tools.
  • Technical degree or certification in structural design, drafting, engineering technology, or a related field.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and detailing of structural systems, including both modular and custom fabrication frameworks.
  • Revise and update structural drawings as needed based on feedback, technical adjustments, or production constraints.
  • Translate creative concepts into precise technical drawings, models, and installation plans.
  • Provide creative problem-solving for structural challenges, balancing aesthetics, safety, and budget.
  • Collaborate with creative designers, account managers, engineers, and fabrication teams to ensure alignment on project goals.
  • Mentor and guide junior designers/detailers, providing training and feedback.
  • Stay current with fabrication techniques, materials, and industry trends to introduce new solutions.
