Tool and Die Maker

Ditron, Inc.Town of Beekman, NY
$40 - $70Onsite

About The Position

The Class A Progressive Tool & Die Maker is a master craftsman responsible for the design, build, troubleshooting, and optimization of high-speed progressive stamping dies at our Ditron facility in Stormville, New York. This is a specialized role centered on precision microstamping — producing miniature, tight-tolerance components from thin gage high-performance alloys such as Beryllium Copper on Bruderer high-speed presses running at production speeds of up to 1,300 strokes per minute. We are actively seeking accomplished toolmakers, who take pride in building dies that perform flawlessly at the highest speeds and tightest tolerances in the industry. The Tool & Die Maker builds and repairs dies at the bench, debugs dies at the press, and submits First Article samples to Quality for approval against the customer part drawing. This position takes direction from the Tool Room Foreman and works in close partnership with the rest of the Tool Room team.

Requirements

  • Minimum 1-3 years of progressive die build experience in a precision metal stamping environment, formal training in tool & die building is beneficial, though equivalent hands-on experience will be given full consideration in lieu of formal education.
  • Demonstrated track record of building dies that consistently produce conforming parts at production volume, with experience troubleshooting die performance issues on the production floor.
  • Working knowledge of GD&T, dimensional inspection, and relevant quality standards (e.g., ISO 9001).
  • Demonstrated experience in precision microstamping and building tight-tolerance progressive dies for miniature components.
  • Familiarity working with high-performance copper alloys, particularly Copper Beryllium (C17200), and other spring and electrical-contact materials.
  • Ability to follow safety rules and processes and keeps own safety and the of others in the forefront of every action.
  • Ability to demonstrate consistency between words and actions. Follows through on commitments.
  • Ability to maintain a positive mindset towards achieving success and eagerness and willingness to accept and meet challenges.
  • Ability to make decisions based upon ethical principles, considering how the choice will affect others.

Nice To Haves

  • Proficiency in EDM Programming and Operation would be beneficial but not mandatory
  • Formal training in tool & die building is beneficial, though equivalent hands-on experience will be given full consideration in lieu of formal education.
  • Hands-on experience with Bruderer high-speed presses (e.g., BSTA 30V2) or comparable Swiss/high-speed precision stamping equipment strongly preferred — including setup, tuning, and troubleshooting at speeds of 1,000+ SPM.

Responsibilities

  • Build, tune, and run progressive dies on Bruderer high-speed presses, including the BSTA 30V2 and comparable equipment, at production speeds of up to 1,300 strokes per minute.
  • Produce miniature, high-precision microstamped components held to tolerances measured in microns for demanding connector, medical, aerospace, and semiconductor applications.
  • Work extensively with high-performance copper alloys — most notably thin gage Beryllium Cooper (C172) — along with other spring and electrical-contact materials.
  • Optimize strip layout, feed and pilot accuracy, in-die sensing, and press parameters to sustain quality at high speed while maximizing tool life and minimizing scrap.
  • Build, fit, and bench-test new dies to ensure correct function prior to production release.
  • Perform hands-on die repair, rework, and troubleshooting at the bench to keep dies running and minimize production downtime.
  • Diagnose root causes of die-related quality issues, such as part defects, wear, and misfeeds, and implementing corrective tooling changes.
  • Build and maintain fine-pitch, tight-tolerance microstamping tooling for high-speed production of miniature components.
  • Set up, dial in, and run progressive dies on Bruderer high-speed presses (e.g., BSTA 30V2) at sustained speeds up to 1,200 SPM.
  • Continuously optimize die and press parameters to hold quality at speed while extending tool life and reducing downtime and scrap.
  • Handle and machine high-strength alloys such as Copper Beryllium (C172), applying best practices for tooling wear, clearances, and finish.
  • Performs other duties as directed.
  • Provides backup and support to other tool room and engineering functions as needed.

Benefits

  • Relocation costs support
  • Assistance with transition to life in Stormville, NY and the surrounding area
