About The Position

The State of Connecticut, Connecticut Technical Education and Career System (CTECS) has an anticipated vacancy for a THS MDET Instructor to join their team at Ella T. Grasso Southeastern Technical High School in Groton, CT. This role involves teaching Mechanical Design and Engineering Technology courses, developing lesson plans, stimulating class discussions, providing social-emotional support, tutoring, maintaining records, assessing coursework, and collaborating with colleagues. The instructor will also engage with business and industry partners to stay current with trade practices and technology, and to connect students with employment and work-based learning opportunities. The position follows a ten-month academic calendar and requires adherence to proper safety procedures aligned with the Manufacturing Industry. Instructors report to a department head.

Requirements

  • An active State of Connecticut teaching certificate as a 090 Occupational Subject, Vocational Technical Schools.
  • In lieu of the endorsement, candidates may qualify with 8 years of relevant, varied, hands-on experience in the trade or technical field.
  • Possess at time of appointment a valid certificate issued by the Connecticut State Board of Education in accordance with the Certification Regulations Concerning State Educator Certificates, Permits and Authorizations, with a secondary school endorsement.

Nice To Haves

  • Completed VTE 113, VTE 116 and a Special Education course (approved by CT-SDE).
  • Experience with educational principles, methods and techniques.
  • Skill in a particular trade or occupation.
  • Teaching ability.
  • Ability to work effectively with students.
  • Ability to express ideas simply and clearly, orally and in writing.
  • Experience with oral and written communication, providing instructional support, maintaining records and charts, preparing reports, and building effective interpersonal relationships.
  • Experience teaching or substitute teaching and be able to demonstrate methods of delivering lessons, assessing student knowledge and the use of educational technology.
  • Involvement in student/community activities as well as help facilitate district-wide and school specific initiatives.
  • Experience with SEL, differentiated instruction, synchronous and asynchronous learning.
  • Experience with and prior connections to the school culture, i.e. CTEAC Member, WBL Sponsor, Job Shadowing Sponsor, and/or PFO Member.

Responsibilities

  • Teach courses in the discipline of Mechanical Design and Engineering Technology technologies.
  • Develop and design lesson and/or unit plans to foster student learning.
  • Stimulate class discussions utilizing a variety of pedagogical methods, including differentiated instruction and fostering relationship building.
  • Provide social emotional support in the learning process and ensure student engagement.
  • Provide tutoring and academic counseling to students.
  • Maintain classroom records and assess student coursework.
  • Collaborate and support colleagues regarding research interests and co-curricular activities.
  • Attend periodic building-level and districtwide meetings and professional development.
  • Meet with business and industry partners to maintain currency in the trade and stay apprised of the newest technology.
  • Provide feedback to district curriculum teams on modern industry practices to adjust curricula when needed.
  • Educate students on proper safety procedures and competencies aligned to the Manufacturing Industry.
  • Incorporate a variety of teaching methods that are practical and include hands-on instruction.
  • Model and demonstrate safe work practices prior to facilitation of learning.
  • Use and properly demonstrate the use of hand and power tools used in the Mechanical Design and Engineering Technology trade/s.
