Test Engineer - Comm Systems

General Dynamics Electric Boat•Groton, CT

About The Position

Department 430 Strategic Weapons Systems Engineering develops in-house embedded systems and integrates government-furnished equipment to support the Strategic Weapons Systems of the Columbia Class and other submarine classes. The department offers a flexible work arrangement that may allow some work to be performed remotely or at home, depending on the position and other variables; applicants should ask the department for details about this opening. The role may be part of Strategic Weapons Systems Engineering, Electronic Systems, or Simulation and Test. The broader engineering team performs system and component engineering for Strategic Weapons Systems and Strategic Weapons Support Systems for Columbia/Dreadnought submarine classes. Its work includes integrating government-furnished equipment and information into submarine designs and taking products through concept development, requirements definition, design, build, test, integration, and the full product life cycle. The Electronic Systems team designs, develops, qualifies, integrates, and supports in-service electrical control system elements that control the environment of ballistic missile tubes on Columbia, Dreadnought, and Ohio class submarines. These elements include sensors, human-machine interfaces, PLC-based embedded systems, controllers, and application software. The Simulation and Test group develops custom simulators that model ship-system behavior, custom test equipment used in construction grooming and system qualification, and performs requirements verification for US and UK submarine components. Simulators support requirements testing of tactical and test equipment and may use Simulink, LabVIEW, and Java, with software deployed on hardware ranging from PLCs to embedded systems running Linux, Windows, and real-time operating systems. The team also supports monitoring and testing at the Strategic Weapons System Ashore facility and uses formal requirements-based test methods and systems-engineering practices to develop requirements and test procedures for design certification. The position requires a high school diploma or equivalent, at least two years of experience managing contractor or vendor interfaces, and the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Defense Secret security clearance. The work environment is indoors.
