About The Position

Mitchell Hamline School of Law seeks qualified candidates for a tenured or tenure-track faculty position to work with its Native American Law and Sovereignty Institute (NALS Institute) and teach and write in the area of Native American Law. The position involves teaching, scholarship, faculty governance, curricular leadership, and strategic development of the law school. The NALS Institute aims to further legal education in Native American law and support Native American law students. The school has the largest enrollment of Native students in the nation due to the NALS Institute's mission. Candidates should be available and enthusiastic about teaching across multiple modalities: in-person, synchronous online, and a blended learning program. An appointment will be made either with tenure or on the tenure track. The law school is located in a historic area of St. Paul, on the Indigenous homelands of the Dakota Oyate, and is situated near cultural attractions and a vibrant arts scene. Minnesota has a history of incorporating alternative dispute resolution and restorative justice, and the area is significant to the American Indian Movement, with a large urban Native population and eleven federally recognized Tribes in the state.

Requirements

Distinguished academic credentials, including a J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school.
At least five years of practice and/or clinical or externship teaching experience.
Experience with fostering or the ability to foster an inclusive and equity-centered teaching, learning, departmental, and research environment where all can thrive.
Availability and enthusiasm for teaching across multiple modalities: in-person classes, synchronous online classes, and the blended learning program.

Candidates must submit a two- to three-page cover letter that discusses their interest in and qualifications for the position and how their law practice, teaching, research, or community service experience have prepared them to contribute to the NALS Institute and the commitment to inclusivity and excellence in Native American law.
Candidates must submit a list of publications and other substantial written work, together with a statement of scholarly interests and agenda.

Assist in the delivery of mandatory Native American law courses in the Native American Law and Sovereignty (NALS) Certificate within the NALS Institute.
Foster an inclusive and equity-centered teaching, learning, departmental, and research environment.
