About The Position

Ball State University is hiring Temporary Substitute Bus Drivers to operate university buses and transport students, faculty, staff, and other personnel on shuttle or dispatched runs. Work hours and days are assigned according to bus requests. There is no set schedule or shift, and weekly hours vary from zero to 40 or more depending on demand.

The position pays $20.74 per hour. Candidates must have current authorization to work in the United States without employer sponsorship.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
• At least six months of verified professional driving experience.
• Demonstrate the ability to drive a bus by passing an on-site driving test.
• Possess and maintain a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with a public passenger endorsement.
• Be insurable under the university’s auto fleet policy.
• Have a good driving record, subject to verification through the Bureau of Motor Vehicles.
• Pass a mandatory post-offer/pre-employment drug and alcohol test.
• Be able to perform all mental and physical requirements outlined in each job duty.
• Have current authorization to work in the United States without employer sponsorship.

Nice To Haves

• Over-the-road (OTR) bus or truck driving experience.

Responsibilities

• Operate passenger buses, shuttles, vans, and paratransit units on routes established by the Transportation Office.
• Inspect buses, report equipment malfunctions, and maintain vehicle cleanliness.
• Fuel vehicles daily and inspect buses for exterior damage.
• Contact the Transportation Office by radio or telephone as needed to report location changes, delays, traffic problems, emergencies, and other relevant information.
• Maintain accurate mileage and passenger records and complete trip sheets and logs for assigned tasks.
• Assist and direct individuals with disabilities on and off vehicles as needed.
• Report route problems and recommend changes when appropriate.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.
