The mission of the Cornell Prison Education Program (CPEP) is to provide high quality higher education in New York State prisons; to help CPEP students build meaningful lives inside prison as well as prepare for successful re-entry into civic life; and to inform thought and action on social justice issues among past and present CPEP students, volunteers, and the wider public. Starting in the summer of 2026, CPEP will begin the transition from the role of administering the associate’s degree program on behalf of Cayuga Community College to the administration of our own Cornell University bachelor’s program which will launch at Cayuga Correctional Facility in the fall of 2027. This will mark the first time that an ivy league university has offered a bachelor’s degree to incarcerated people reinforcing once again Cornell University’s ethos of “any person, any study”.
