About The Position

This position is responsible for dispatching and receiving calls on police radio, answering emergency phones, and handling multi-line telephones. The operator will complete dispatch calls for service on the police records database. Essential functions include receiving, evaluating, and dispatching calls for police, fire, and EMS services in a timely manner, as well as performing notification and information gathering duties to support field personnel. Operators also receive, route, and file paperwork generated by police personnel. The role involves planning, organizing, and performing work according to standardized procedures.

Requirements

  • Ability to type thirty (30) words per minute.
  • Must obtain Telecommunication certification within one year of employment.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing with attention to detail in documentation and presentation.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and to communicate with department personnel, City employees, and the public.
  • Knowledge of Police Department and Communication Division rules, regulations, and guidelines relating to processing, evaluation, and dispatching.
  • Knowledge of the console communications system and operation of back-up two-way radios.
  • Knowledge of department and division record keeping and reporting procedures.
  • Knowledge of the geography of the City.
  • Ability to extract pertinent details from monitor screens, audio tapes, radio speakers, or telephonic communication systems.
  • Substantial demand on mental/cognitive abilities and emotional stability.
  • Ability to communicate with the public under stress, involving understanding of and adhering to complete confidentiality.
  • Ability to work shifts of 8, 10, or 12 hours; overtime required when necessary.
  • Requires acute sight and hearing, distinct speech for radio and phone communication, and ability to communicate well in written form.
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Satisfactory driving record.
  • Proof of eligibility to legally work in the U.S.
  • Successful applicant will be required to pass a pre-employment drug screen and background investigation.

Responsibilities

  • Receiving, evaluating, and dispatching calls for police, fire, and EMS calls for service in a timely manner.
  • Performing notification and information gathering duties in support of personnel in the field.
  • Receiving paperwork generated by police personnel and properly routing and filing such paperwork.
  • Receiving telephone, radio calls, and mechanical alarm signals for police, fire, or medical emergency services.
  • Entering information into the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system.
  • Retrieving information for dispatch from the CAD System.
  • Dispatching police vehicles by radio, and receiving and transmitting orders and instructions using appropriate code language to police officers at the scene of an emergency.
  • Coordinating radio communication with State Police and other local Police Departments as needed.
  • Receiving fire emergency calls or fire security system signals, sounding alarms, and monitoring equipment responding by radio.
  • Dispatching police vehicles to emergency medical calls.
  • Using a computer terminal to input, retrieve, and transmit information from the National Crime Information System.
  • Receiving and transmitting information from state motor vehicle files to patrol officers.
  • Reporting major criminal or emergency calls to the Chief of Police or Officer in Charge.
  • Entering data into the computer system for records keeping.
  • Retrieving data from the computer system and assisting in the preparation of court information files and case incident reports.
  • Maintaining a daily log, wrecker rotation log, and security systems files.
  • Responding to after-hour informational calls for town departments.
  • Testing and performing minor maintenance on equipment.
  • Reporting equipment failure to a supervisor.
  • Performing related administrative-clerical duties as required.
