The Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E), an agency within the U.S. Department of Energy, recruits graduate students with technical and business skills to help prepare technologies developed through ARPA-E programs for market adoption. Summer Scholars receive mentorship from ARPA-E’s Technology-to-Market team, Program Directors, and Fellows. The program offers opportunities to research market trends and commercialization strategies, develop techno-economic analyses, assess stakeholders, map sectors relevant to ARPA-E’s mission, and develop metrics to support programs and project performers. Scholars may work on projects examining the civilian impact timelines of DARPA technologies; cross-sector learning curves and cost reductions; commercialization outcomes and barriers for ARPA-E technologies; demonstration benchmarks for scalability; lessons from project challenges and strategic pivots; reliability modeling and testing; commercialization pathways for supercritical CO2 technologies; defense acquisition pathways for dual-use technologies; markets for ultra-low-temperature cryocoolers; or markets for plasma-heating and driver technologies. Candidates should be prepared to immerse themselves deeply in their project subject matter and work independently. The position is based at ARPA-E headquarters in Washington, DC, and is available only to U.S. citizens. Scholars receive a weekly stipend and travel costs. A typical appointment lasts 10–12 weeks. This is not a federal appointment; selected candidates receive an offer of temporary appointment from ORISE. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis and are due no later than January 18, 2027.
