About The Position

The Technology Coordinator provides essential media production facilities and technology support for the department. This role involves planning and managing production spaces such as broadcast and podcast studios, newsroom environments, and media relations spaces. The coordinator will maintain and troubleshoot a wide range of media production technologies and systems, including studio cameras, audio consoles, lighting systems, teleprompters, and control room technologies. They will also manage student equipment inventory and reservation systems, troubleshoot user issues, and ensure adequate supplies and equipment are maintained. Coordination with faculty, students, vendors, and university technology services is crucial for equipment installation, lending, and production support. The role also includes assisting with the evaluation, specification, purchasing, and lifecycle planning of media production technologies. Additionally, the Technology Coordinator will train and supervise student workers. The position also entails maintaining computer labs and classroom AV equipment, including setup, configuration, maintenance, and deployment of operating systems and software. This includes coordinating with university IT services for system imaging and upgrades, ensuring safety and security protocols, monitoring AV equipment, and repairing computers and peripherals. Furthermore, the role provides technological support for faculty, staff, and students, responding to requests, troubleshooting issues, and developing training programs. The Technology Coordinator acts as a liaison with university technology departments, advocates for departmental technology funding, and manages departmental purchasing and record-keeping, including ProCard management, inventory control, and proper disposal of outdated equipment. Other responsibilities include supporting the department's website, online news site, and media production equipment, with occasional evening hours required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and 3 years of relevant experience.
  • Experience researching, installing, configuring, maintaining, and troubleshooting computer systems, operating environments (including Windows and macOS), hardware, software, integrated technology systems, and classroom, instructional, and audiovisual technologies.
  • Experience supporting media production environments and technologies, including broadcast, podcast, newsroom, and/or studio facilities; studio cameras, microphones, audio systems, lighting systems, teleprompters, control room technologies, and/or media production software such as Adobe Creative Cloud, Pro Tools, or comparable applications.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently troubleshoot and resolve complex technical and audiovisual issues while managing multiple priorities, projects, purchasing activities, and inventory systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, students, and technical support personnel, with strong verbal and written communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with computer systems and operating environments, including Windows and macOS, networked devices (Ethernet and Wi-Fi), and enterprise IT infrastructure.
  • Experience with instructional and AV technologies, including projectors, video conferencing systems, Crestron control systems, and remote/virtual meeting platforms (e.g., Zoom).
  • Experience with software and digital tools, including Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Cloud, Adobe Creative Suite and web technologies (HTML, web hosting, and website management).

Responsibilities

  • Plan and manage production spaces in the department’s new Smith Hall facilities, including broadcast and podcast studios, newsroom environments, and media relations spaces.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot media production technologies and systems, including studio cameras, audio consoles, lighting systems, teleprompters, control room technologies, and related equipment.
  • Manage student equipment inventory and reservation systems; troubleshoot common user issues with cameras, microphones, and related production equipment.
  • Ensure adequate supplies, materials, and equipment are maintained; coordinate equipment repairs and order replacement parts as needed.
  • Coordinate with faculty, students, vendors, OTS, and university partners on equipment installation, lending, lab support, and production support activities.
  • Assist with evaluation, specification, purchasing, and lifecycle planning for media production technologies and related equipment.
  • Train and supervise student workers to assist with equipment checkout, production space operations, and related responsibilities.
  • Setup, configure, maintain, re-image, and recycle desktop computers in the lab and on classroom teaching stations with the assistance of student lab aids and Towson University Office of Technology Services (OTS).
  • Deploy and maintain Windows OS and Mac OS system software, including several suites of campus licensed apps and department-licensed apps.
  • Coordinate with OTS to re-image Dell PCs and Macs through a local Windows server, or through the campus JAMF server for Macs.
  • Maintain safety and security protocols of the labs and classrooms according to the university’s guidelines.
  • Monitor AV equipment in classrooms, including projection systems, lecture capture cameras, and remote connections.
  • Repair computers and peripherals where feasible; arrange for repair by OTS or outside vendors when required.
  • Coordinate with OTS for computer upgrades and safeguard computers and TU network from malware and any other threats.
  • Assess periodically for computer maintenance, virus scans, deleting student profiles, and updating software packages.
  • Respond to MCOM faculty and staff requests for technology support for in-person or virtual classes, conferences, or special events.
  • Assess circumstances, troubleshoot, and engage the appropriate personnel, if needed, to address problems quickly and accurately.
  • Develop and deliver training programs for faculty and student employees on the use of standard and program-specific software.
  • Support students with installation of program-specific software on their equipment.
  • Coordinate with faculty on special requests for software and hardware through Student Technology Fees (STF) project requests.
  • Plan for future technological needs by staying up to date with technology changes in mass communication or related field.
  • Represent the MCOM department to OTS and other technology support groups outside the department.
  • Work with COFAC Technology Committee to coordinate, guide and advocate MCOM faculty and staff proposals for technology-related funding.
  • Manage a MCOM Department ProCard/VISA credit card for purchasing supplies, furniture, and equipment for the labs. Comply with ProCard report and audit policies.
  • Monitor usage of department-owned resources, including software, hardware, printing, etc.
  • Manage the upkeep of the computer equipment storage and supply.
  • Properly discard all outdated equipment and unusable supply. Manage compliance with the university’s audit.
  • Keep a current inventory of all MCOM lab equipment.
  • Provide information on technology assets to OTS, property control, and other university entities where applicable.
  • Support the MCOM department with other duties as assigned, including support for the department’s website, online news site, and media production equipment.
