About The Position

The Resource will act as subject matter experts on a variety of Mainframe performance and capacity analysis and reporting activities. This role enables and supports the day-to-day operations of the Government of Ontario's Mainframe performance and capacity disciplines, maintaining KTLO activities and project work related to the planning, installation, maintenance, and upgrades of software products. This includes support for post GDC Mainframe migration activities and the most recent Mainframe acquisition for Disaster Recovery at our CO-LO site.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 7 years' experience in Mainframe Performance/Capacity Management roles.
  • Experience with interactive capacity management tools including MICS, RMF and other ISV tools.
  • Strong understanding and demonstrated experience working with SMF data.
  • Performed capacity requirement assessments for CPU upgrades and refreshes, including the ability to perform ‘what-if’ impact models.
  • Past experience reconciling mainframe billing for ISV workloads.
  • Experience performing complex calculations to estimate workload impacts in terms of MIPS and/or MSUs across a multi-partitioned environment.
  • Understanding of zIIP utilization.
  • Experience with SAS Programming.
  • Ability to proactively identify CPU cost-savings opportunities.
  • Firm understanding of IBM Mainframe CPU concepts including CBUs and CoD.
  • Ability to configure mainframe tools such as MICS, RMF to build reports and view data from these tools.
  • 10+ years experience providing oversight to support mainframe infrastructure.
  • Demonstrated experience overseeing Mainframe Performance and Capacity for refresh and transition activities, as well as team resources associated with the migration.
  • Demonstrated experience with replacement of large enterprise complex services and hardware at large critical locations.
  • Demonstrated experience and in-depth knowledge of modern Data Centre service models combined with a solid background in contemporary Data Centre approaches.
  • Recent Experience (Within 3 years).
  • Demonstrated experience with assisting transition and refresh.
  • Demonstrated experience in change management activities.
  • Demonstrated ability for strong documentation and writing skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge with Mainframe Performance and Capacity Management in a support and Project Management role.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and operational support experience with Mainframe in a large scale environment similar to the Government of Ontario.
  • 10+ years demonstrated experience in complex projects related to data center uplifts and hardware/software migrations.

Responsibilities

  • Provide Performance and Capacity Operational Support for sustaining the day-to-day operations of Mainframe Software and program products.
  • Provide expertise to review and analyze mainframe resource and capacity data to ensure the most effective use of computing infrastructure and IMS/DB2 subsystems.
  • Author and update capacity plans for the mainframe platform.
  • Provide project input into mainframe refresh initiatives and upgrades.
  • Provide support for mainframe vendor billing and inquiries from application teams.
  • Prepare mainframe capacity assessments for application development and infrastructure teams for project-related workload changes.
  • Provide and document incident analysis, resolution, and prevention, designing procedures and best practice techniques, using IBM and ISV online tools for opening and managing incident report tracking and resolution.
  • Participate in Mainframe DR Hardware installation project activities.
  • Actively participate in periodic disaster recovery exercises.
  • Maintain disaster recovery readiness of systems.
  • Monitor status of systems to proactively prevent incidents.
  • Plan, configure, and support installation of new Mainframe hardware platforms.
  • Collaborate with internal business partners in IT Operations, application development, Infrastructure, and IT Production Support to accomplish organizational goals consistent with supporting both IT and Business objectives.
  • Work directly with Hardware and Software vendors on solutions, build your network, and deepen existing relationships.
  • Leverage verbal, written, and presentation communication skills to build strong partnerships.
  • Provide migration support for Mainframe software and networking components.
  • Provide decommissioning support for Mainframe software and program products.
  • Handle daily operational changes, Incident/problem management.
  • Provide on call/standby support when required.
  • Ensure closure of tickets in a timely manner.
  • Keep clients/management up to date on ticket status.
  • Adhere to Service Level Agreement (SLA) metrics and device maintenance.
  • Provide technical MOP for all changes.
  • Ability to provide acquire system captures and articulate/document capture and point or root cause.
