About The Position

The Technical Writer/Editor II writes, maintains, and prepares technical documents for high-frequency active sonar systems in the Advanced Technology Laboratory (ATL). The position supports project leads as a primary or support writer on multiple projects, producing and maintaining user guides, operations and maintenance manuals, and other documentation in HTML, PDF, and Microsoft Word formats. The role also maintains assigned GitLab issues and contributes to documentation development, verification, revision control, internal IT support, and multimedia production. The position is based at the Pickle Research Campus under standard office conditions. It may involve repetitive keyboard use, manual dexterity, testing in office and field environments, possible weekend, evening, and holiday work, and possible interstate or intrastate travel. The position is expected to continue, with an earliest start date of immediately. Applicants must be U.S. citizens and must meet government security investigation eligibility requirements for access to classified information appropriate to project needs.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in English, technical writing, or a similar field; relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
At least two years of professional or technical writing/editing experience; relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
Strong organizational skills and focus.
Strong analytical and problem-solving capability.
Ability to work under pressure and accept supervision.
Ability to work independently and with peers, clients, and management.
U.S. citizenship.
Must undergo a government security investigation and meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information at the level appropriate to project requirements.

Nice To Haves

Master’s degree in English, technical writing, or a similar field.
Prior military or related government documentation development experience.
Eligibility for immediate access to classified information.
At least four years of professional or technical writing/editing experience.
Demonstrated knowledge or ability to produce software, hardware, or technical documentation.
Experience writing hardware assembly, maintenance, and/or operation procedures.
Experience writing user guides and/or operating procedures.
Experience creating, maintaining, or adhering to an internal style guide.
Experience with or knowledge of photo and video editing software tools and techniques.
Experience with or knowledge of authoring tools such as MadCap Flare, Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft PowerPoint, and Microsoft Word.
Experience with or knowledge of source control tools such as GitLab and Microsoft Azure DevOps.
Knowledge of source integration strategies (SIS) or configuration management (CM) for documentation.
Knowledge of HTML, XML, CSS, and other markup languages.
Some understanding or familiarity with Linux.
Demonstrated knowledge or ability to express and present key principles.

Responsibilities

Support project leads as a primary or support writer across multiple projects.
Write and maintain technical user guides, operations and maintenance manuals, and other documents in HTML, PDF, and Microsoft Word formats.
Maintain assigned GitLab issues.
Participate in testing and verification of sonar components, as needed, in office and field environments to develop and validate technical documentation.
Participate in peer editing and publishing processes.
Support the development and management of revision control practices, documentation, and tools.
Participate in the documentation team’s internal IT working group and support management of IT resources, processes, and internal documentation.
Provide photography and videography support, including capturing and editing multimedia content as needed.
Perform other related functions as assigned.
